Figured I would start a build thread for the baggage handler I picked up at an auction. I posted it in the tech section. https://www.binderplanet.com/forums/index.php?threads/800-w-unique-body.146727/

Since the conveyor and hydrolic portions are missing I'm planning to cut the mount off the back and make it completely flat to haul materials around the farm. I cleaned the engine bay out this afternoon and prepared the motor to test fire but ran out of day light. I took some advice from this forum and instead of hooking up a battery and hoping for the best like I normally would've done, I removed the distributor and pressurized the oil system while turning the motor over by hand. I removed the valve cover and did this until oil flowed from the rockers. Everything under the cover seemed to be in good order.

I had a put the valve cover back on with a fresh gasket. I removed the carb and governor but haven't gone thru them yet. I have a spare holley to use to run the engine. Probably going to not use the governor.

Had some used NGKs that I put back in the plug hole. Hopefully next week I can, check compression, get it wired, reset the timing, and fire it up.

Good job! Like the methodical approach!

Finally got around to checking the compression, numbers look good enough to run.
1 - 160
2 - 150
3 - 155
4 - 140

Got some homemade leads and wired up a starter button. The carb seems to be in good shape. Gonna clean it and wire up the coil and distributor and hopefully fire it up.
I also cleaned the axle and found a partial BOM number but I can't find it in the literature I have. It reads 2527 3. From what I gather it should have a 60 or 61 in front of it. There was a 44 cast into the housing but it was on the top not on one of the webs around the cover and the axle tubes were larger in diameter than the 44 on my parts 800. It has nuts on the hubs so it's a taper shaft of some sort. Any one got any info?

Good numbers for compression. And under the valve cover looked great for an old motor too. I would mayve try to flush all the old crust out of the coolant system. Other than that, it looks like it shluld be a runner. Keep us posted!

Coolant flush is def on the list I didn't get a pic but I took the cap off the radiator and the inside was extra crusty.

Alright, made some progress today. Distributor looked good so I cleaned the points and threw it back in.
PXL_20210315_212132843.jpg

I've had trouble setting timing in the past so I tried a new method this time. I wired up the coil and the number one plug and used the timing light to dial it in as I turned it over with the starter. I only got shocked twice before I quit adjusting and turning it over at the same time.
PXL_20210315_214750666.jpg

I got the timing set and put on the rest of the plug wires. Turned it over and got it running on some brake cleaner for about 10 seconds. Next up is a carb clean and we should have a runner.

I also miraculously got the studs removed from the intake manifold so the governor can go on display on a shelf.

Took some persuasion and patience but both came out in the end after some soaking with WD- 40.

I've heard of using a test light to set initial timing, but I don't remember the details.
I used a test light on my CB360 to set the timing but there's no distributor, each cylinder has its own point. The test light would go out when the point opened and that would correspond with a timing mark on the crank. I suppose this method could be adapted to work with the distributor but you would still need to align the cap with the rotor on the #1 plug.

Got the shorter studs installed and frankensteined the carb out of 1 1/2 others and some leftovers of a rebuild kit. Got it mounted but ran out of daylight. Hopefully I can put some gas to it tomorrow.

IT...IS....ALIIIIIVE!
Flushed and primed the fuel pump by turning the motor over while I had the fuel supply disconnected from the carb
PXL_20210319_213716616.jpg

Then I fired it up!!!
Ok there's supposed to be a video but it seems all I can directly upload are pics.
Anyway I did manage to clean out a spot for it on some concrete.

I could use one of those for sure! That would be a good little guy to transport small quantities of hay/feed etc. And a nice step up from our John Deere Gator!!!!

Some day!

Good work! :cowboy: :thumbs up:

Been a while but I've got a small update. Been cleaning out the cooling system. It was very crusty, I removed the therm housing, water pump, water pump housing and steel tube for soaking and cleaning. Ended up using a spare thermostat housing. I made up a radiator delete to flush the rest of the system without running the chunks thru the radiator. Filled the engine with a flush solution and water and am going to let it get up to temp and cool back down a few times and hopefully that will get the system clean enough.

These are the before pics, thought I took some after pics when I cleaned them but I guess not. The water pump cleaned up and did not have any play and doesn't leak. Here's the flush set up.

Well, there ya go! Interesting read (for this geek anyway!) Did it come with a second page? If so, would you mind posting so I can see the dates? The VIN falls well into 1966 production. It's a G-number but it falls into February of 1966 for a Build date.

710903 is the code for a Half Scout (as if we didn't know)

looks like 10 in that orderCT399 special paint 6038BL, a dark blue (chip attached)

The converter, Wollard Aircraft Service Equipment is still in business.

RA9 (D44) rear axle, open diff, but with 4.88:1 ratio

Note the fold-down windshield option, no double chosen so that the windshield could be easily omitted (see the code)

Note the SE 40 amp alternator and the extra engine pulley (for hydraulic system I presume)

"Special Engine AT" is handwritten in the ship-to box and I presume it refers to the extra SN "eight-code" 812300 pulley attachment, which would have had to be attached before the engine was installed. Such shorthand notations are sometimes difficult to interpret correctly but this is my educated guess.

Anyway, I have one several other Half Scout LSTs but this is the first for an airport conveyor conversion. Thanks for posting it!

Here's page 2
That answers some questions. On the top right of the page is the printed, original Line Sequence Number, D4759, which is the order it was planned to run the time. At times, often due to parts shortages, it would not run the line at that point. Note the handwritten numbers starting with "F". Those are "Fill-In" LSNs, which instruct the crew to insert the Scout into the 5615 sequence as it happened... some 856 units later than planned, about five days of production (might be more haven't checked the 1966 calendar to see if any weekends or holidays fit in).

Also I misspoke above on my guess of the build date above. I look at my docs and see a typo: G191502 starts in May of '66. The Feb listing also shows G191509 as the start VIN, but it's way out of sequence... but probably really is about G181XXX. I have some other LSTs from around this period and G191147 (D4759) falls into late April production. With the updated LSN of F5615, that May 12 production date makes more sense now (though all the G-number vins are still a nightmare to figure out sometimes). IN the G-Number era, I use the LSNs more than the VIN to estimate a build date because of the silly policy FW had on drawing all VINs, truck and Scout alike, from a common pool.

That's some good info. I didn't think the blue was the original paint job. There's stark white under the blue that's chipping off. I also thought the 40 amp alternator was cool. I looked at it further and I think the original alt is still on there and the regulator was replaced with a completely different aftermarket unit. The alt bracket looks like they may have just modified a generator bracket. We have an old FMC orchard sprayer with an early 345 in it that has almost an identical bracket for the generator.
