New Scout owner here looking for others in the Rhode Island area to connect with. Also looking for an experienced mechanic with scouts.

I’m in CT near UConn. I was out your way with mine recently though. Took it to the dunes on the Cape last week and we cut through RI on the way there and back.

Thanks for the reply. Any advice on an experienced IH mechanic?

Electrical, my Scout is in excellent shape and runs great, and pretty much everything operates but I keep finding one electrical issue after another. Someone really rigged a lot of the wiring. Seems like a pretty easy truck to rewire I just don’t have the time to do it unfortunately.

Hi Jim,
There are several of us here in central Mass that are long time Scout owners. Electrical issues are common with the Scout's due the age. It's worse when someone has hacked the wiring. There are start solenoid and relay upgrades, but sometimes you just have to cut out the bad stuff and start fresh.

Mine had a painless wiring kit done by someone on Long Island. One of the best things the previous owner did.
I have the manual. Could scan it for you.
Mine’s a 1970 800a.

Hi Josh,

Sorry for the long overdue reply but I didn’t think anyone was going to reply! It’s great to know there are some people not too far away. I did decide to just order a complete kit and rewire her from front to back. Also going to replace the starter relay and ignition switch to rule out everything. The previous owner decided to put a stereo system in and really hacked up some stuff doing so. There are also at least 6 unidentifiable cut wires under the hood just hanging around or wrapped up around something. It’s weird because basically everything works but it’s kind of scary that everything does! Hopefully when she’s completely road worthy we can arrange a small meet up somewhere!

I just "found" this board. I live in Middletown and am rebuilding my 79 Scout II. These guys in Bristol RI replaced a wiring harness a year ago in a Scout II for a guy who used to live in my neighborhood: https://www.apacheautomotive.com/

Hey Gary,

I was actually going to take my scout to Apache but couldn’t get a schedule down with them. I wound up taking it to a shop that specializes in classics and race cars in Scituate called Mason’s automotive. How are you making out with your 79? I haven’t seen many Scouts since I bought mine about a year and a half ago. Let me know when you’re up and running and we could meet in Newport.

As listed in Builds I should be registered & driving next week. Locally I have to check out the local drive in weekly hot rod cars and coffees.
