Hi,

My name's Will, from BC Canada.
Here's my build thread for my 1978 4x4 Loadstar 1700.
I'd been looking for a larger truck to replace my 86 f350 service body.

(this photo is post walking out of the bush where I installed a c9 - hence all the crap strapped to the side)

I was pretty set on some version of military 6x6, but struggling to choke down the $10,000-$20,000 I would have to pay upfront to get one! Till I saw this old beauty. I got it low-bedded up to Prince Rupert in September last year, since then I've been slowly getting parts together for it & trying to get on top of work/life to get time to work on it.

Here is what's left of the LST. It was taped to the side of the rad? Hoping someone could shed some light on the frame; it has a drop frame for the front/rear leaf spring mounts to lift it ~4" or so. Is this factory? I couldn't find any reference in the parts book I have.
Currently not at home so unable to get any photos, but I assure you they're comin.

Ideally I would've liked a 6ct or dt466, but the fella I bought the truck from had a low mileage dodge 5.9, so he sent that up with the truck. Easy peasy. Time will tell if it's a good combination or if the cummins will be better in my tired, old ford!

Stripped it down, bores all look good, so gave it a bath in hot lye for a day or 2, then honed it out, set of bearings, pistons etc and back together in ISX red

The trans I found lying outside one of my customers shops. It is an RT6610 (took a while to figure this out as no tag on it)
Pulled apart, new bearings etc, and changed 1-5 with RTO (overdrive) gears

I have an SAE 2 bellhousing, flywheel & clutch to join em together.
Anyway, that's it for now.

Seeing as I'm stuck in camp, stand-by for work, I'll share some more details.

Started drawing up service body yesterday (yep I'm really this bored after 7 days sitting around doing f/a)

This is a crane/flat deck I got the other week. It's a 10k crane. I'm not sure if I'll use it, or take the crane off my ford and put it on the international.
I'm going to try and get some engineering done to see what I need for a structure to support it, as I'd rather scratch build the body rather than using the deck that the crane's currently attached to.

The crane certainly ain't the prettiest but she's a strong-un

All my image links were broken. Fixed now.

I am going to stick with juice brakes for now. The vacuum booster will be replaced by a 90's 4700 hydro boost unit w/ 12v backup.
To supply air for the trans, and possibly air ride rear I got a good price on a take off 6ct (8.3l cummins) air compressor from ebay. I'm not 100% sure this will work on the 6bt, but after many hours scrolling through parts catalogues I think it may. I had to get a different drive gear, and the bolt holes may need to be slotted to clear the pump, but should be more than sufficient air for what I need (overkill for just running the range switches). This mounts off the front timing case, replacing the vacuum pump, and the power steering pump will piggy back off it.

I will also have an additional air compressor for air tools, gouging etc. - either belt drive or pto from the cummins, or a dedicated motor, OR off a welder, I haven't decided which route to go with this (lots of choices to procrastinate on!!)

If anyone is in need of an 404 v8 c/w 5 speed, they're more than welcome to it in the next week or 2 when it comes out of the truck. Only catch is you'll have to get it from Prince Rupert, BC. Otherwise sadly, they'll most likely be going to scrap. Engine runs good, has propane conversion. Trans seems fine.
If anyone needs any related parts I can pull them and ship for cost of shipping.

Make sure you run the support brace at the back of the compressor/power steering pump. I've seen the aluminum gear housing covers break before on the Cummins 6b series engines that don't. Very nice build and nice score on the truck. If you ever make it down to N Idaho stop by and I'll show you some of my Loadstar 4x4s. Will that compressor clear the injection pump?

Thank-you. I like Idaho and would like to visit again sometime. So I may take you up on the offer!

above is the 6bt

50963693062_64262c4173_z.jpg

this is the 6ct

as you can see the 6bt pumps have the holes offset 10* or so. I think I will either need to slot these mounting holes, or drill and tap new holes in the front timing housing. Maybe I should've held off putting it back together, but this wasn't really planned at that stage!
I will find out next week hopefully if I get some free time,

Anyway, one way or another the air compressor will fit!

above is 6ct with compressor tucked in

and here is the 6bt with compressor hanging out the side. I don't have the VE pump, so may not require as much room

Does anyone know if this frame is factory, or is it something someone has modified. The truck was initially a BC hydro (utilities) truck. I am doubtful they would do a backyard suspension lift, but who knows?
Obviously this will need replacing, but I am trying to decide if I will keep the lift or return to stock. If it's a factory/approved thing I will keep it the way it is

Cheers!

From what I seen over the years, they may have patched a break or a quickie beefing up.not factory.

I don't have any knowledge or experience with a truck that big (but I'm totally digging it!!), but I almost think that lift looks factory. Probably added on the 4x4 versions?

It looks like the previous owner cut the rear, springs and frame from another vehicle, took the top off the frame C channel and installed on the side of the frame you have now.
