Hi all,
I'm new here, please forgive me in advance if I haven't scoured the boards or used search properly... I'm an old Saab guy (7 of 'em), and my girlfriend has inherited her father's '77 SS II. We had it shipped over, and man is it in bad shape. She wants to rehab it and keep it in memory of her dad, but it just isn't feasible for her to have in its current state.
I have great memories of riding with my own dad in his '69 Scout, and after decades of rebuilding and living with Saabs, Volvos, Range Rovers, etc. a good old American truck should be a real relief to work on.
I'd like to 'convert' the truck to a Terra type vehicle. The soft top was shredded, the bows are useless, the soft doors destroyed, and the door inserts (I call them the tubs) are in just godawful shape. She wants the truck for an around-town little hauler. We are in San Antonio, which although is deep in the heart of Texas, is roughly the 7th largest city in the US - straight up suburbs for us.
I've been working to clean it up and kill the rust, pulling the seats that my buddy is taking to Mexico to get reupholstered, getting parts ordered for the engine, etc.
What I need to do is ask everyone here if they know of a good source to get a couple actual doors and a fiberglass top. Super Scout Specialists seems to sell a bulkhead for $175. I do have a budget for this project, but it isn't that big.
I haven't pulled the door inserts yet, but I sure hope that the catches for the real doors are there underneath the plastic! Looking through the holes in the tubs in the front, I can see that there of course are no hinges...
If anyone is interested, I'll post pics of my progress. I need to get this project finished asap - I've got one of the last Saab 900 convertibles made languishing in the driveway.
