Thanks for the info Colin, that was exactly what I was looking for. Rich is a super good mechanic and isn't phased by a lot of the things that scare away others. From what I know this is a job for a friend of his and they basically want to get the truck going again to run in parades, etc. If a simple re-ring will do the trick, they'll have no desire to go further than that. Basically he wanted to know what the parts situation was before he started digging in. I think swapping out the old Green Diamond for an SD or something similar might be an option too if the flat head needs too much to get it back into running shape. From what I've gathered reading posts here, the bellhousing patterns should be the same if they go that route. Personally I'd kind of like to see a KB-1 with the original motor, but if they choose to do a swap, I'd certainly prefer a slightly newer IH 6 to the oh so common small block chevy hot rod swap.

Thanks for the info

Dave

Intake on my BLD250.

I need to find a 6V battery to try and fire it up.

The truck is pretty complete and hasn't been hacked over. Anyone have the IH spec sheet out of the service manual for the 250?

Mild! The only engines more noisy than my BD 240 are diesels. I have said it elsewhere, but once when I asked my mechanic what I could do about the noise of the engine. He said,'If you didn't want an engine that sounds like that, you shouldn't have bought an International!"

Actually you don't. Make sure the lights and radio are off, but even that is not critical. The instruments and OEM gauges work exactly the same whether the vehicle is running 6 or 12 volts.

The starter will spin it faster with no harm to the starter. Nothing in the ignition system is detrimentally impacted by the 12V. I converted my first S120 to 12V. The ONLY changes I made for the life of the vehicle (200,000 miles until I gave it away) was the light bulbs and the generator. I ran the 6v starter, which was old when I got the vehicle, for 40,000 miles worth of starts on 12v. Even the radio worked with no problems. No changes need for the gas gauge or the sending units. ( added an additional fuel tank)

Some performance questions for the BG241 motor...

Exhaust : Does backpressure play a big part in performance with these motors? I was thinking of coming off the headers and doing a dump pipe - nothing really more then that unless needed.

Intake : I know that my engine comes with a Holley 1 barrel carb, I was wondering if I could put a custom intake that is non traditional and still have it function properly?

Also I'm looking for the possibility of reliable aftermarket parts such as cams and other motor mods.

were any of the inline 6 engines built with A/C as an accessory? I've got a BG265 that I'd like to add A/C to one day.

thanks

Hey guys, I'm new here and don't even know if this is going anywhere.
That said...
I have a 55 R122 (120 with extra hauling) and it has a BD220 tilt valve engine. It hadn't run in 30 years, I've had it for 8 as yard art, and so I decided to go through a list to see if it would run... it does, pretty damn well. Now I'm screwed as I have a nice long list of projects on the thing.
The current big question is:
Does this thing need a harmonic balancer? It doesn't have one now, everything works though.... the belt lines up, etc..
It has the arched bridge front motor mount.
If I solve this issue, I can proceed as if I had good sense.
Any help out there?
55 R122

To clarify: do you have a crank pulley on there now? IIRC, the 220 engines used just a pulley but the 240 and 264 engines did use a pulley w/ harmonic balancer.

Rob
Thanks a 3/4 ton for the info....
Yes, it has a crank pulley and everything looks like the IH god intended, nothing to note out of the ordinary.
I was talking with an old junkyard expert, and he told me the same thing, though without the specifics of your comment.
I honed in on the balancer because of a vibration when accelerating/decelerating the engine (without brakes, I haven't driven it yet), but the smoking gun is the flywheel..... it's got about a 1/16" wobble.
When I do the clutch, of course, I'll deal with that.
Clutch is essentially seized, will be rebuilt by Capital Brake and Clutch in Sacramento.
I believe the engine is about a 58... it should have the SD220 as a 55, but someone got in there and got their fingers greasy.
It has the tilted intake manifold that indicates that it's from a 4x4?
Any more info I can get would make me really grateful.
I believe that this is the only IH pickup from the 50's that's running in my county, and there are a lot of restored cars and trucks around here. My primary is a 55 Willys wagon that is a bit of a showstopper... totally stock, sikkens paint job in the original color.
Thanks again
