Default OD manual transmission options

I have a 1967 1100b 2x4 shortbed stepside with a 304 and granny low 4 speed. I don't know which tranny it is just that you can put it in first and floor it and the speedo barely moves. My Papa got her new in 67 and worked her harder then a one ton then my mom bought her and did the same. Now she is mine and I just want to driver her cus I have my cummins to do all the heavy lifting so she is going just take it easy. The trans that she has now was great for working but I really have no use for it now and would really prefer something with a OD and a 1st gear ratio in the 4 to low 5's. If anyone knows of any that can be made to fit that would be great. If ther are no OD trans I would be happy with a 4 speed with that ratio. I have heard that some of the ford T19 did but haven't found any one that can tell me if any of the IH's did. Thanks

IH offered a 5 speed overdrive known as the T-34 transmission in those trucks, but they are much more common in the medium duty trucks (Loadstar and Cargostar). Your best option is to order an NV4500 conversion kit from IH Only North and get an NV4500 from a cheby or more likely a Dodge 3/4 or 1 ton pickup from the mid to late '90s.

IH has a close ratio 4 speed with a 4:1 first gear.

Do not know how to tell a close ratio from a wide ratio 4 speed -- search this forum.

Do not know the years it was used (nnnn - 1980?), but assume it should bolt to your vintage pickup.

if you go the t-19 close route you will want one from a pickup. the the 4x2 scout version usually has the d-20 case adapter and is there fore a couple inches different in overall length.

The IH T34 five speed OD transmission will fit in your pickup. You will need the matching bell housing and throw out bearing collar. Your drive shaft will have to be shortened. You may have to get a different drive shaft attachment for the transmission output.

The T34 and its brothers T35 and T36 do not shift as quick and easily as the T19 four speed does. They are medium truck gear boxes in that regard.

One caution: You live in CO. If you do lots of hilly driving [Are there any flat parts of CO?], you may find that the large jump between 3rd and 4th gears is a slight problem especially when towing heavy. When you need to go down from 4th to 3rd, the gap is more than 2000 rpm. It is not much problem if you don't tow or haul heavy.

Even though I live in a relatively flat area, I removed the T34 and replaced it with a T36 because I haul and tow and the gap was a pain on the hills.
