Default Scout 800 fuel milage

Just out of curiosity, any of you 800 owners ever check to see what kind of MPG numbers you get?

Thinking about an 800 as my next project, as my first Scout was an 800, and was curious as to what kind of mpg they get.

One really doesn't buy a Scout of any stripe (except possibly the diesels) for its fuel economy.

I could get an honest 20 mpg out of my 1965 w/152 four-banger, and under ideal conditions, 15 or so from a Scout II w/345.

YMMV.

Yep, 11-14mpg depending on gear ratio for a v8 800, slightly better for a 4 cyl.

Do a search for a project Gary Billings did a couple of years ago. "EconoScout" or something like that was what he titled it. Built up (or stripped down) one of his 800 herd to maximize MPG's. I know he reported back some numbers, but can't recall what they were.

Just so happens I'm taking my 4-cyl '69 800a on a little road trip. I have consistently been getting 20-22 mpg cruising at 55-60 mph. This is multiple fill ups across multiple states, around 210 miles out of a tank, taking around 9.5 gallons. I was... astounded.

My 69 800, with a well built 304, 4 speed, 4.26 gears and 33" tires gets about 12 driving it on the road and staying at about 65. Lots of stop and go or higher speeds and it drinks more gas. Even though this truck is really no worse on gas than the others (at least much worse), it seems that way becasue of the two little tanks.

I used to get 17 in my 66 with a 152 4 cylinder. This was driving 299, 101, and 5 in N. Ca and S Or. I was 16/17 when I had it so it was pedal to the metal.

'69 800A, 304, 3 speed, 3.73 yields about 11 around town, 13 - 14 highway at 65 - 70 mph.

YMMV

1971 Scout 800B, 304V8, BW-11 auto, 3.73 gears, 32" Goodyear MTRs - I get about 10-11 mpg at best. Heavy bumpers, spare tire, high-lift jack, etc., can't be helping it any.
