Default Machine Shop Recomendation

Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a machine shop with IH experience?

I'm rebuilding a non-IC 392 to swap into my Scout. I am familiar with Chevy's, but do not know a thing about the nuances of a IH block/heads.

So if anyone can recommend a shop in Atlanta area (or within a couple of hundred miles) I'd appreciate it.

If not, what are the specifics of an IH block/heads that I need to tell the machine shop about? If any? I hear for instance to put BBC valve springs on the heads versus stock IH.

I have only dealt with one machine shop here in Atlanta.

Will's Auto Machine Shop Inc.
3149 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd
Atlanta, GA 30341

They machined a crank for my 351 in less than 24 hours. I had a knick in the crank that I wanted polished out and dropped it off at lunch. He called me the next moring and told me that the front crank journel was almost out spec and was smaller than the rest. He said it would still be ok, but would do whatever i wanted. I knew that this would cause low oil pressure and told him to machine the whole thing. He said it would be ready before lunch!

Originally I went to them to get some prices of machine work when I was going to build my 392. They were knowledgeable of the IH engines, and understood what I wanted to do and accomplish. I wanted to mill the block and heads to get a better compression ratio. They said no problem as long as I told them exactly how much I wanted taken off. They can do the machine work for you, but I don't know if they will build the engine for you. So as long as you know what you want, they can get it done.

I live in the Buckhead/Sandy Springs area, Fulton County.

That machine shop is only a few miles from where I work. So it is real convenient to take care of things at lunch time. I do most of my parts and material runs during lunch. Most places like that are closed at five and on the weekends.

Its been over a year since I have been there, I hope they are still open. It looked like they have been around for a long time.

Check with Chix's Machine Shop in Smyrna, GA. They handled engine machining work for Marietta and Cobb County fleets of IH gas-powered buses back in the day.

FYI -- I've not had any work done there.

Good luck.

Since your in dacula There are two that come to mind. I have never used them for machine work but have always heard good things about lawrencville auto parts machine shop. The second, I have used years ago, is ewing auto machine in Snellville. Don ewing is an old school builder and knows his stuff.
