Default Suggestion for my bumper

I have straightened my 58 A 100 bumper best I can. I tried to lead the imperfections so I could chrome it. After several frustrating attempts I gave up, can't afford to pay to have it done (I don't think anyway) so I am left deciding to powder coat it glossy black or refelective chrome. I am afraid the reflective chrome being right next to my chrome grille would funny, the black I am not fond of.

I have been reading that there are some guys who use a product called metal lab that with a specific process can be chromed. Any Info??

Did you price the straightening and chroming? It was quite competitive recently.

You can scuff up the chrome a little with a 220 wet paper, fill the imperfections with bondo, primer it completely, then use silver laquer(can buy it at most auto stores). They also have a clear you can spray over it but I liked the finish it gives right out of the can of silver laquer.I used this paint on my 1969 Scout 800 bumpers and love the way it looks also it does not look too bright like chrome silver or cheap silver paint. Also later on you can buff it out if you put enough coats of paint on the bumper.Hey at least this way you can wait for a good straight bumper to buy at a later time when you find it.I did a frame off restoration on my car and like the painted bumpers better than the chrome, also my rear bumper is a step bumper which was never chrome and the front one I got from the junkyard which had no chrome on it either.Good luck.

I would check with a local re-chrome bumper repair business for a price.

I googled "portland bumper rechrome facility" and found a VW message board that had this info on it

. I was an auto body appraiser for a major insurer and found a lot of shops liked the work of Allied (Allied Plating 800-545-2002.) in Spokane. As I recall, you pay the UPS one-way - they pay the other. Like most replaters, they have levels of work quality so be sure to ask.

Go to Oregon Plating, down in the SE industrial area.

Oregon Plating is my preffered plating service. They are good, they chromed my grille and it looks perfect. I talked to him about my bumper and he told I need to have it leaded, (they farm it out) it will be expensive and then the chroming will be $500.00 on top of that. I'll call around Tuesday and do some research including allied in Spokane.

I should mention the bumper was previously painted and I had it dipped.

For anyone who cares. I decided drop the idea of filling my bumper and broke out the hammer and dolly. Spent about an hour and got it looking good. Sanded and polished it, looked really good. Went down to Oregon Plating (awesome) turned it over to Scott and the first thing he said "needs alot of work eh". It's going to look good but the price eeekk, not something I want to go cheap on though. It won't be ready for my trek to Binder Bash apparently the recession has skipped right over the chroming biz. By the time I have this thing together I am going to have to have it painted again fortunately the hard things are done.

Got my bumper back today. Oregon pleting may not be the fastest or cheapest but they are the best in my opinion. It looks beatiful, you can see by the picture how excited my model is. They even chromed my IH bumper bolts and as requested did not polish the IH off the bolt.

looks awesome!
I gotta get my rear bumper replated myself. Were your bolts the kind with the two small "teeth" to prevent spinning?
I had to cut all but two off my t-all with the red wrench. Know where to get new ones, or do I need to figure something else out?

The only suggestion I would make is to get a new 'square file' and new 'carriage style' bumper bolts with the square shanks. The new bolts would have stainless steel caps on the heads. Measure the square of the bolts and start fileing! Or spend more time in the wrecking yards. Post your needs in the 'wanted' section.
