Default Tetnus, the build-up

Well guys, after having the scout for a while I figured it was finally time to do a write-up on the build so far.
I started out with this hunk of junk...232 I6, D30 front, D44 rear with True-Trac, T-18, Dana 20, 4" Superlift springs and a crappy camo paint job. But for some reason, the damn grew on me.
Paid a bit much for it originally ($2200) but I wouldn't trade it for anything nowadays.

Thats when I first got it.

Ended up doing nothing more than fixing things as they broke, but I did pick-up a winch for free so naturally I had to build a mounting plate for the sucker to sit on.
The finished mount without the winch

Headed off to school and started the rewire when things dictated that since I had an under the dash fire and the rest of the harness looked like hell and I wasn't too happy about it.

Starting the project I thought it was going to be a 1 weekend cake walk, but things turned out a little differently since I fixed sh!t as it popped up along the re-wire.
Picked up the new harness from Jeff at IHON.

Mounted the new fuse block under the dash and started routing wires before I touched anything with the soldering gun.

She looks a little souless without the lights in.

Rebuilt the rear axle with new Yukon gears with an Eaton Detroit for some better traction when I had enough of wiring, besides I had access to a full auto shop at the time and I was getting credits for working on my own junk.

Added a new dash from IHON as well, got the autometers from the local Kragen (damn things cost too much)

While the re-wire was going on, I also bought a new poly tank from IHON since my old one was rusted too hell.
Installed the sucker and ran all new hose to the motor, installed a fuel pump on the frame rail that's a little bit more reliable than the mechanical one that was vintage '71.

Ended up finishing the re-wire job about 6 months after I started and I am happy to say that I've had no more electical fires in the damn thing.
Moved to Las Vegas and more work has been done since then.
Bought a new Weber 32/36 and installed it, also at the same time I picked up an HEI distributor and dropped that in as well. Drivabillity has greatly improved since those two mods have been done.

Now for the current look...No doors and the top will be coming off once I can find a show bar for a decent price as well as the bikini top.

Most major work has been put on hold since the apartment complex that I live at has grounded me from welding/cutting/grinding...etc. No work that involves fluids or major parts. However the security guard is willing to look the other way for a case of beer every 2 weeks as long as people don't complain about my "Socially Unacceptable" vehicle as the HOA put it.

Future plans include going reverse shackle, SOA w/ the 4" springs that I have now, full width D60 rear with either a D44 front or another D60 front from a Ford.
351W swap with the T-19 tranny and possibly a doubler setup behind that.

Now throw some opinions out there and also, what do you think should be done based on the pictures?

If you're going to go with SOB power, I admire your decision to take the road less traveled and avoid the all too boring and overdone SBC route.

Theres a method to my madness with the idea of changing the running gear and motor out from what IH had to start with.
Availability of parts for the motor...much easier with a 351w or 302 than that of an IH sv motor or the 232 that I have now.
Same goes for the axles...I can get damn near any part over the counter from any parts store and only a few will they have to order in...makes fixing things when on the road so much easier.
But personally from a cool standpoint, I would love to steal Roberts idea and build a bada@@ 304 bored out.

Got a little bit more done over the weekend, installed a fuel pressure regulator since my fuel mileage had dropped dramatically.
Turns out that Weber carbs like a steady 3psi and no more than that.
Picked up the Holley regulator at the local parts shop and mounted it to the inside fender. Hookup was a breeze but it took a little bit more teflon tape than I thought to get the threads to seal.
I'm happy to report that the mileage has jumped to around 17.5 around town.
Much better than the 12 I was getting with the 1 bbl Holley and a hell ov lot better than the 7.5 I was getting there for a while.

Just had to fix a guys toyota that mounted a weber on it. With the factory mechanical pump it was dumping fuel in the primary and secondary at idle.

Added a regulator at 2.5psi and all was good.

reminded me why I hate carbs!!!!!!!!!!!1

What are you having trouble finding for the 232?

Although the 351 will make good power and is a good engine, you could also consider swapping in a H.O. Jeep (AMC) 4.0L (242). It would be a pretty painless swap from the 232 and makes a good amount more power than the 232 and 258, mostly due to the better head design. You could also just swap a 4.0L head onto the 232 for a little increase in power, but a good cam would really make it worth the effort.

The biggest problem that I've had so far finding was a replacement starter.
But otherwise, the I-6 is good for those who like them. Me, I'm a V-8 guy and I love the power that you can get out of them.
Its a personal choice, not the fact that one is better than the other.

More power is a good enough reason

Most DJ5's or older postal Jeeps have the 232, if there's a junkyard near you with anything old in it they're bound to have one. You can also buy a remanufactured or new starter from a few different vendors.
