I'm sure it could be made to fit in a D cab truck. I had a customer that was a big time tractor puller. A real pioneer in the Alcohol Super Stock. With a 2255 Oliver.

Anyway he got tied of the 400 in his F350. So one winter he put in a 3208 cat in his F350 with a Clark 5 speed. He went from 4 mph (towing) to over 10! He had to fab almost eveything to mount it. And had to have a 3" body lift to close the hood. He had some issues keeping the rear diff. in the truck, towing about 16k# with 650 ft lb of torque.

So around here it was a big deal to do in the early 80's. I have seen 3208's and 6V53's in ton trucks. Then Ford and IH had the 6.9 and so on. So it died out in the late 80's.

Around here the 549 was not popular at all. A lot of RD450's then the dv550 was crap! Then the Dt466 saved the day of IH diesels.

Can anyone link the recent thread about the Ebay/Craigslist C series with an LV in it? The pics are probably gone but it just shows that it is doable in a full size.

I tossed those pics last weekend. The guy who posted the link on another site emailed me last night. Maybe he has the pics saved.
When I was loading the 549 the PO asked if I was interested in a 605. It is on an irrigation pump also. The farmers are switching over to all electric. He stated they ran these at 3100 rpms. I used to collect Cub Cadets. I can buy these big boys for less money and though I cant roll them around they sure are neat.
On another note. The motor mounts are on the bellhousing on these Lvs and Mvs. The bellhousing will drop between the frame rails of a pickup. It makes it very easy to make motor mounts and tie in both rails. We had to make a new front mount. I'm thinkin my Dana 44 wont stand up to the 549 very well. The 446 drops the front to within a half inch of the bumpstops. I run 3 inches of carb spacers on mine so the extra height of a 549 shouldnt be a problem. Here are some pics of the 446

Here are two more showing the carbs spacers and HEI. the HEI was out of an 84 Camaro. The dizzy shaft was 7/8s too tall. We made a spacer and an aluminum block for the clamp. I used the Loadstar power steering pump. It slobbers some but works well.I ditched the 2 core pickup radiator and used an aluminum one. No antifreeze, just some Super Cool additive and water. It'll get to around 180 to 200 degrees by the end of the pull.

That is really neat Gus! We used to have a fleet of MV-404's at work, so I have respect for the MV-404/446 series of IH gas engines. Have heard people say that the 6.9 and 7.3L IH diesel engines are based on these designs. You can see that your engine appears to use the same water pump as the 6.9/7.3. Thanks for the pictures!

Robert

Yes the water pump and many other parts interchange between the MV and the 6.9/7.3. It was not a case where they made a diesel out of a gasser. They started from the get go to build both and have where they interface with the truck be the same.

hey, new to the site, I have been a longtime fan of the big ih powerplants, I had a 549 with some "modifications" in my 79 f-350 crewcab, unfortunatley I had it out when I had to move and I didn't get back to pick it up soon enough and it went to scrapyard, does anyone have a 549 or preferably a 605 for sale? preferably cheap, not running is ok, will get rebuilt anyway, I will have to travel from ont canada to get it but I really miss being able to light tires from a dead stop in 6th gear![/I]
