here are some overall photos of how it sits today 7 months after purchase things i've gotten accomplished so far: the PO had installed a "nice" rear floor patch that was screwed / riveted in place right over the old rusty material......turns out he screwed several holes directly into the top of the gas tank (i found pieces of the drill bit when i was cleaning out the tank. there was also a small rusty place forming at the front edge where the strap had rusted through. i yanked the tank out and cleaned it in my shower because it was still winter and i don't have much of a garage set up. patched the holes on top, primed, spray undercoating, and black paint with all new hoses. after reinstalling the small rusty place at the edge turned out to be an extremely small hair line crack that was slowly leaking. i later found out you can't put gas tank patch over a crack as it has nothing to grab onto....i later had to shove a punch through the crack and ream out a 1/4" sized hole and re-patched it.....everything looks good now the PO had rhino-lined the entire exterior of the truck....talk about a pain in the butt removing all of that stuff to see what was underneath ![]() i spent about 2 weekends total removing the entire rear wiring harness (made from house wire no less) and custom fabricating my own harness from scratch with fully soldered connections. i was literally amazed that it worked perfectly (almost) when i hooked it up and tested. the only thing i haven't trouble-shot yet is the turn signals.....i'm thinking a bad relay or connection or something in/under the dash ![]() found i had a leaky transmission one day when i tried to take it for a spin around the block. i made it to the end of the driveway before i realized the transmission wasn't engaging. after pushing it back up the driveway , i decided a trans removal was in order. i have since cleaned up the AT/TC whcih was completely covered in a thick layer of grime/grease, changed all the fluids, put in a new front main seal, changed the filter, and made sure the new pan gasket was sealed on tightly with some silicone gasket sealant....also changed the o-ring on the dip stick tube as it was leaking around the base as well. the reinstall was unsuccessful last weekend so i will be attempting it again this weekend.....lets hope for more lucki've also completely disassembled the front end and i'm in the process of repairing and/or replacing alot of that (see next post) |

here you can see what's going on with the front end.....i had a leaky radiator so i ended up just removing everything. the inner fenders were shot and i just happened to have a pair that i removed from a free parts scout that i parted out/junked like 5 years ago in college. amazingly enough, the inner fenders were about the only thing worth saving on that scout and i had no use for them at the time, thankfully i saved them anyways
i've spent many hours sanding down the surface rust/paint/dirt and priming/painting the ones to reinstall.....i've only managed to get one inner fender ready for install after 2 coats of primer / 2 coats of paint (international blue tractor paint from Ace) i need to patch some spots on the cab before reinstalling the fenders with all new hardware....thanks for Fred Demmon for the best deal on original style fender bolts i could find. i salvaged a used radiator off my scout woods beater that hasn't moved in probably 4 years. i don't think the radiator i removed is repairable because it looks like someone used that radiator repair gunk so i really doubt it's repairable a second time. the salvaged radiator needs pressure tested and needs a new bracket soldered onto one side before i can install it back in i'm on the look out for some good front fenders, the ones i removed are heavily patched in places and probably not much good to me now |

Looking good. Lots of work but will be worth it in the end.

transmission back in
![]() wish i would have thought to mark the bolt locations from the flex plate to the torque converter....i assumed that the 4 bolt holes were symmetric and would all be interchangeable.....upon reinstall, i learned that it only bolts back up one way and it took us about 30 minutes to figure out exactly what went where just need to hook up the lines, driveshafts, wires, etc Last edited by mudturk37; 06-15-2009 at 10:48 AM. |
