Default Machine shop and basic ? about them..

I'm taking my heads and intake to the machine shop and decided to do these things:

1. hot tank both heads and the intake
2. surface the heads and intake ( or what they can )
3. Valve job

Question: I have a hole on the bottom of my intake. It's where it looks like a freeze plug on the underside on the intake and that has rusted through. Is this actually a metal plug and can I weld it shut.

Another question I have is the basic work that can be done when I take the parts in. Should the valve guides be replaced even though they seem fine? Should I go for the chevy springs?
Any additional help will be great.

The plug you are talking about is a Welch plug, the machine shop can replace it for you.

Have your machine shop check the valve components, if they all check out I would leave them be. If I were planning on rebuilding it as a daily driver, I would replace the valves guides and seats. 1978 and earlier valve seats are of a material that was not intended to be used with unleaded fuel, but I've never had a problem wit hit.

If you need new valve springs, then go with the Chevy or Chrysler springs, if not to old IH springs will do just fine for the low RPM's the the SV engines turn.

I use to say that saying about the top and bottom engine fix. I'm going to sell here after the engine gets back together, or maybe a few hundo after that. Compression was great and cylinders are cherry smooth. It's a 1974 so I'll have them check the valve components as you said HUD.
Thanks about the plug info too. As you can see, its mainly to get it running for the sale so cost is a factor but new valves, resurfaced heads and the such I hope will add value to it.
