Default 300/400/500/800 Series Diesel Engine History

Hi,

Does anyone here have any complete history on the entire 300/400/500 series in-line six-cylinder diesel engines, which were both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged?

Engines making up the 300/400/500 series 6-cyls.:
D-312, sold from ??? to ???
D-354, sold from 1960s-'70s
D/DT-360, sold from 1988 to 1994
D/DT-408, sold from ??? to ???
D/DT-414, sold from ??? to ???
D/DT-466, sold from 1975 to 1994
DT/HT-530E, sold from 1995 to 2003

For starters, I know:
DT-360 was sold from 1987 to ?, 160-210 HP?
DT-466 (A) was sold from 1975 to 1977, HP ratings unknown
DT-466B was sold from 1978 to 1982, available from 160-210 HP
DT-466C was sold from 1983 to 1993, available from 165-240 HP (before serial #567491, covering 1983-87 models) or 185-270 HP (after serial #567492, covering 1988-93 models)
DT-466P (the last mechanically-injected version) was sold from 1993 to 1994, available from 175-230 HP (standard torque) or 195-250 HP (high torque)
DT-466E (electronic version) sold from 1995 to 2006, available from 175-230 HP (standard torque) or 195-250 HP (high torque)

The DT-466E is currently being sold as the MaxxForce DT (the larger DT/HT-530E was superseded by the 570E in 2003, which itself is today marketed as the MaxxForce 9). As the MaxxForce DT, HP ratings range from 210-300 HP.

If anyone has any insights on any of the older engine series, please contribute to this thread.

Thank you,

Ben (IHCollector81)

You may want to add the D-301, an IH built engine available in the 1600's during the '60's and installed by special fleet order in some 1200 pickups(the infamous Chemlawn trucks).

The 354 is the Perkins 6.354.

Ben,

This likely has errors in it since IHC always seemed to have acceptions!!

There is also a D358 used in like the 786 and????

The D-354, sold from 1960s-'70s is a Perkins engine IHC (trucks) and Oliver used it.

AG applications with the American Bosch Pump:
The DT414 (I don't recall a NA version of the 414) was used in 1066 and 1086 and maybe the 2+2 3388.

There is a D436/DT436 used in the 966(NA), 986(NA), 1486, 1566/1586, IIRC in the 4166/4186 and I'm not sure on the 1466 (other possible apps: Hydo 100/186 (NA), 2+2 3588/ 1460 Combine, 6588).

DT466 used in the 4366/4386/1480 (maybe in the 1566).

Case/IH used the DT?A?466 in the 1680 combines this 466 had the Robert Bosch pump HP rating was 275 or 280 IIRC.

The DT466 and DTA466 were used in the Loadstar (rare IIRC) and the S series Trucks, but I think only in the 1900 and up, but don't quote me. The S series trucks used the Robert Bosch pump.

I don't really know about the newer 400 series engines.

I have 1992 4700 series with a DTA360, 175 HP, Bosch inline
I have a 1988 S1854 with a DT360 190 HP, Bosch inline
I have a 1999 4700 with a DT466E, 195 HP fully electronic

do you need to know anything specific about these models that I can check on first hand?

The DTA360s were usually used as a step up over v8 diesels for vocational use especially buses and are high rpm units. They feature an air to air intercooler. The HP ratings for these are 165 to 185.

Welcome aboard, Stu.

I would like the complete HP and torque specifications as to:

DT and DTA-360 (all versions)
DT-466C (the 165-240 HP versions, up to serial #567491)
DT-466C (the 185-270 HP versions, after serial #567492)

If you want to, you can send me a PM in regards to these at either vintageben81@comcast.net or edgebenjamin@gmail.com

Thank you,

Ben

Geeeze Ben you don't care what you ask for do ya?

You need to kinda look at the big picture to see just how many applications these engines were used in. You have to remember when engines like the 300/400 were designed they were for off road equipment. those began life in the mid '60's and were first used in construction equipment. IH had 3 major divisions then, plus lots of smaller ones. The truck/ bus applications came along later. The various HP and torque for each application, plus sometimes many configurations for each model makes for alot of choices. I could probably narrow it down to a range used for each division which would give you a pretty good idea what was available.

I've done some of the older stuff in the past, nothing real complete tho.

Here is some 86 series info.

Its a bit hard to read, but if you download it and then open it and expand it you can read it.

The 1586 has the DT436 not the DT466.

Default DV/DVT-800 Specifications

Does anyone here know what the bore and stroke dimensions are as to the DV/DVT-800 series?

For starters, it displaces 798 cubic inches (13.1 liters).

The common hp ratings:
DV-800 (1981 model 4586 4x4 tractor) = 300 shp, 235 dhp
DVT-800 (1981 model 4786 4x4 tractor) = 350 shp, 258 dhp

shp = shaft/PTO horsepower
dhp = drawbar horsepower

Thank you,

Ben
