Both the M-1-4 and the early M-2-4 Had 5 lug hubs. Then later M-1-4 and late M-2-4 had six bolt hubs. there was a manufacturer change its in the parts book I believe it was Rzeppa and Bendix. Both the M-3-4 and the M-5-6 trucks shown here have Chevy 11/2 ton and GMC 2/12 ton beds respectivley.
Chevy 216 and 235 sixes have sprayers and dippers and babbit rod bearings GMC 270 and 302 use pressure oiling systems and inserts. For some dumb reason Chevy did not pressure oil there blocks until the late 235 and when the 261 came out in 1958. I have a bunch pictures of the IHC M trucks some that show original beds. Most of the beds are going to be found in Southern California and on the east coast you ask why, Because thats were the Navy and Marines sold them to Farmers and city and state motorpools as well as to fire service who spread them over hill and dale. I have not found out the proper way to put an attachment in the post or how to start a gallery. I have tried to add a picture of my BC-172 witha BD-282 its an USAF truck built in 1960. Also a An M-2-4 with an M-3-4 open cab body with doors a popular upgrade for the Marines in Korea. And also two picture one of a nice M-5-6 that used to be on the Dunes in Southern Oregon it was Shirleys truck set up to give rides in the dunes and the other is a stock picture of an early M-3-4 with the bed that they came with. One thing the M-3-4 bed was is 24 inches deep thats the first dead giveaway the bed is not correct. Both the Navy and Marines used these trucks for troop carriers and dump trucks so the beds were spec'd for those options. Mhe IHC dumps usually had troop seats in them. hope this works if not it wont be for lack of trying.

Let's link in some pics from the nice folks at the IH archive in Wisconsin

I used to see these trucks quite a bit all around Camp Lejeune when I was stationed there. There was a surplus store right outside the gate of the New River air station called "Saigon Sam's" and he had several of them in the back. I would bet that there were probably 40+ of them just sitting in fields all around the base. The Salvation Army even had one that ran that they used in parades.

Yes, having disassembled those, they sure looked puny for such a big vehicle. Thanks for the sweet assembly pics. I had not ever seen those before.

Those are outstanding pictures. I sure would like to be able to walk around those trucks.
I know they made a dump body for the M5h6 but I've never seen a picture of one. Did the dump come in the short wheelbase only? Seems odd to have a dump body with an open cab. Was the dump body also made by Anthony Hydralics? Thanks, Greg |

Greg...
On the M-5H-6 Heil made a long and a short Dump body on the big 169 inch WB truck and on the little 149 WB inch truck. Galion, St. Paul and Anthony made only Short ones (149 inch WB).

I believe the Wisconsin Archive picture captioned as an M-2-4 is actually a late M-1-4 why...
The lift rings in the front bumper are early style eye bolts not the later heavy duty u bolt style. The truck is a six bolt hub but is not running the combat style rims of the five bolt and is a dually. Small 750x16 tires possibly not 900x16. Facing forward troop seats. Single wiper I have a full size glossy 10x14 copy of this from the archives and it looks like a pre war or very early war sales picture not the typical proving ground ones seen later on.
