Default Scout 800 backup light problem

My brother-in-law recently purchased a Scout 800 and in looking over it for inspection purposes, I found no bulbes in the backup lights. Once I put bulbes in, the backup lights come on whenever the ignition is on, no matter what gear it is in. It has the Warner auto, and I have looked all over both it and the shifter and can't find any switch mechanism. How did they work from the factory? It doesn't matter if I have to put a separate switch in to control it, but where would I find the wire to splice into?

The back up light switch is part of the neutral safety switch. To access it on the 800 you need to remove the large housing surrounding the shifter. The switch itself is attached to the shifter.

In addition to Nick's information, here is an 800 wiring diagram showing the back up light circuit from the switch to the lamp (indicated by a heavy black line).
Note: this is a zip file so you can enlarge it to see detail.
