Default Dana 30 or Dana 44 front axle?

Have always been told that a Dana 30 would have the four bolts and flat
plate on each joint, and a castle nut on a Dana 44. Have also been told
that all the Scout 2 Dana 44's would have disc brakes. I have a drum brake
axle with the castle nut. Thanks for any answer.

The 'castle nut' is a rear application, AFAIK.

Maybe i have not named it properly, but it is a castle nut with a cotter
pin thru it, and there are four. Two on each knuckle. And it is the front axle,
not the back. So do you know if it is a 30 or 44?

I think the 'four bolts and a flat plate' you're talking about refers to the closed knuckle Dana 30 used on the Scout 80/800 series. I've got an open knuckle 30 out in the back that I pulled off of my 73 Scout II, and I'm sure it has ball joints (hence the four 'castle nuts'). As far as I know, they used the open knuckle 30 on all of the early Scout II's, so the only way to tell for sure is to check the shape/size/number of bolts of the diff cover.

The easiest way to identify a D30 from a D44 is by the shape of the center portion of the axle, also known as the differential housing.

That link I gave you takes you straight to a picture of the SHAPE of each differential housing, and also gives you some nice to know information for the future on ID'ing the axles.

Decent guide anyway ...

Back in the day of the old board: the BB & the ColoK5 site were @ Top 4x4 Sites . com with 'others'. We used to go back & forth for #1 (RamchrsCentral too). LOL K5 finally blew us both away. ROFL. Wonder what happened to Top 4X4 Sites ....

The mind wanders on .....

Also not true, and as a corollary not all Scout II Dana 30's have drum brakes

The question was if there were any Dana 44's with disc brakes. I knew
there were some Dana 30's with disc brakes. Thanks for writing anyway.
