Many of us have limited edition scouts and never knew it until we read "Doll-Up" on the Line Setting Ticket (LST) for our vehicles. Quite often all of the identifying characteristics were stripped out many years before we ever took ownership. I am asking you, the IH crowd, if you or someone you know has a Champagne Series (CS) scout and what details are on your LST. My goal is to produce a database of owners and the original production items and dates on each identified CS scout. If you have one let me know... or if you aren't sure post away and we'll see if we can sort this out for you. To begin with, CS's were a limited edition Scout 80 and later Scout 800 manufactured between 1964 and 1966 (to date no other years have been identified). Remember, this is a build date and not the date it was registered (hence a LST is your best bet and not the evil DMV). Case in point: according to the DMV mine is a 1968 Scout, but the LST indicates it was built in 1966. Thus your 1967-plus Scout could still be a CS scout. I have seen estimates on total production vary between 1,500 and 3,000, although the number may be as high as 9,000. According to Frederick Crismon's book, they (like the Red Carpet Specials[RCS]) were built to commemorate the 100,000 scout built by IH. Furthermore, Crismon's book indicates that 3,000 CS's and 3,000 RCS's were built in 1964 alone. So the total production figures of 1,500, 2,500, and 3,000 that have been discussed here and on other bulletins, does not seem likely. Below are some basic elements of the CS scout and what to look for. (By the way, there are very few absolutes with any IH rig; plus 40+ years of PO alterations can make it that much more difficult). CS Scouts had a champagne colored door panel which covered the steel on the inside of the door. A door no longer having the panel would have a series of holes around the edge of the door where the panel would have been attached with push nuts. This is a reasonable way of identifying a Doll-Up door after a lot of years. CS scouts had a headliner, carpet, sound deadener, and rubber mat in the back with aluminum trim to hold down the mat. Many of these items when gone leave little or no trace. Seats were the low bucket type but in a Champagne color. A rear seat would have been similar in appearance. Dash and steering column were all painted a Champagne color. Some shift boots were champagne colored (tan), while some had shift knobs that were also champagne colored (again kind of a tan color after all the years). Only the Scout 80 CS's had a dash pad. That's kind of it in a nutshell. Obviously since any one of these items could have been added by a PO or as a dealer option, a LST with the "Doll Up" text at the top is your best identifier.

My model 80 is I am quite sure a Champagne series.
I don't know the build date, as I only have the original LST from the glove box. It has all the goodies Including the 5 full wheel covers, Chrome front and rear bumper, doll up traveltop with headliner , rear tire carrier, vinyl door cover (the color is sort of two tone faded, silver to gold color) Chrome knobs on dash, Dash is the silver color , doll up rear, I am missing the dash pad, although there are screws that I think were used to hold it in place. The color is Aspen Green with the White travel top. Thanks Roger W |

Roger,
That sounds like you might have one there, does it say "Doll-Up-Scout" at the top of the LST in prominent letters? Judging by your description I am betting it is a Champagne Series as you have already surmised. Let me ask a couple questions about the observable dates. You say there isnt a build date on it (usually upper left hand corner), that is not too uncommon. I take it that there is no signed/dated "Quality Assurance" stamp on the LST either. Occasionally, there is a second page that lists final inspection dates for the rig, anything? If none of the above, we can try the following, what year was the vehicle registered as? Occasionally, there is a month and day listed in the "District" box... it would be at the far left side of the box... have anything there? Chris

My LST does say "DOLL-up-SCOUT" in heavy bold black print. The Scout is registered as a 1966 on the title. I don't think any of the numbers on the top will help, but I will print them as the LST has them Scout80 100wb 03900GVWA 780805200001 This is the top line directly above the list of materials. I noticed that the engine is listed as a 4-152T. Does that T mean it was a turbo? It no longer is a turbo, if it was at one time. If that is the case, now I really want to find the turbo parts to put it back the way it was. I also have a interesting item that was in the owners manual. It is I think, the lower half of a vinyl emblem that says Scout in letters about an inch tall with directly below it BY INTERNATIONAL. It is about 31/2" wide about2"tall It is very much like the RCS emblem that was on the door of the Red Carpet Special. I guess I should invest my $20 here so I can post some pictures. Also, I should order a LST from one of the vendors and probably have the build dates. Thank you Roger |

Yup that was a turbo. If you are dead set on reinstalling a stock turbo, get back to me. I might be able to help. Otherwise, work on your other stuff while I work on the bigger RayJay turbo setup for a Corvair and I'll let everyone know how that worked out.
The stock units are very problematic to work on. The turbo was one of the smallest that RayJay built and no Light Line vendor has parts for them anymore if they ever had them in the first place. That means everything from gaskets to machined parts must be specially manufactured and that is a very big deal and quite expensive. You can get the same look by using the Corvair setup which will give you more HP but will require internal engine modification. This can be done with just a few stock parts and some non-complicated fab work.

I have a 1963 scout that was tested on 1/29/63. I know that it is not a "Doll-up"; however, it does share some of the same characteristics... it has arm rests on both sides and rear floor mat. I assume these were options, not standard items. Maybe interest shown by the buyers for items such as these gave them the idea to start the "Doll-ups".

In any case Roger I am including your name in the data list of CS owners so any info you can swing my way would be great.

By the way, on your LST, their should be call outs for the items you mention on your vehicle. Any chance their is an asterix next to the code numbers on the line?

No asterix from what I can tell, but they are listed on the LST. What would the asterix mean? |
