Default Is the MPFI that much better than the AFI complete kit?

Howdy folks, I am new to this forum but I am finishing my build on my 72 scout II. Here are some pics of my progress.
<a href="http://www.picturepuppy.com/gallery.php?u=rupert14&g=Scout-progres">Scout-progres</a>

I have a newly rebuilt 345 with ported exhaust ports. I am running a 727 with kelvar bands, a STAK 3 speed, 14 bolt rear with disc conversion, D60 front with hy steer, 35 spline inner/outer chromoly, Yukon super joints, ARB's front and rear with 5.13 gears and 38" super swampers and coilover front supsension on 14" fox coilovers etc etc etc.

I am ready to add the fuel injection but I can't seem to decide between the AFI complete kit with distributor etc and the MPFI system that includes the intake manifold. I have a Holley projection system on the shelf but after reading, I am hesitating installing that at all. I realize how nice the MPFI system is but I just don't know if I am going to get another 2K worth of performance out if it versus the AFI complete kit. I love the torque of the 345 but for the cost of MPFI and headers, I have considered spending a bit more for a chevy crate motor with FI. (about 5-6K) I have read threads saying both are great. Anyone ever go from the AFI complete kit to the MPFI kit?

Bob

Here's your Scout link

You'll find the MPFI system is just a better system than TBI, especially with your head work. the MPFI system also comes with a new EFI distributor. Do you still have the stock cam?

I think his question is what's the benefit vs return on investment.

How is it better?

More HP?
More torque?
More MPG?
How much of each?

Have there been any actual dyno comparisons run under controlled conditions?

More Bling?

Is the increase worth the additional cost?(IMHO this would have to be a personal decision)

I think it is the stock cam. I have the paperwork from the rebuild but I don't know what the codes represent on the part numbers. I bought it from a shop owner. I just left a message on his cell so I will find out. The AFI kit I was looking at also comes with a distributor. Is the MPFI distributor significantly better?

Hey bill USN-1, I just met Allan here in prescott at checker auto parts. He is coming out to see my scout sometime and my office is just a couple blocks from his house/scout haven. He told me you knew everything there is to know. Nice to meet you as I start to join the IH club.

I consider that coming from Allan very flattering.
I think he has forgot more then I know.
But we are both old salts from the USN so we've been around!

As for the distributors..there is no difference.
The EFI system only needs a magnetic pickup. There is no timing control in the distr itself.

Welcome to IH!!
A little advice...do not go to Allans house...you will be sucked in and there will be no hope for you...next thing you know, you will be buying a parts scout.
Then it's a travelall.
Then maybe one for the wife.....
It just won't stop.

We have not done any dyno testing on IH engines. But comparing TBI to MPFI on several other makes in real world and dyno testing the MPFI is always ahead in HP, torque and less fuel consumption. The biggest winners for MPG are the engines that work the hardest like trucks and boats.

Just take a look at all new cars? MPFI

My problem with using other motors is they change more then just the induction system.

Different manifolds, heads, etc....
So it's not really a real world comparison.

Maybe there's a hotrod magazine article or something where they did a comparison on the same motor?

For us...we are using the same manifold(in most cases) even if the new one is aluminum.
So as long as we used the same timing table, the rest would be close to the same.

As for todays cars....I think most of us are aware that the reduced emissions are major factor in the systems design and use.
