Default New '67 Scout Owner

I just bought a 1967 Scout for $1,300 from a guy in my hometown. I bought it to plow my driveway... and probably a few family members as well. It's in decent shape... for a Michigan vehicle. The dash has been replaced and the floors have been lined with plywood, but the floors really don't look too bad from underneath. It's a 4 cyl. 3 speed. The previous owner backed into a tree and the lift gate for the top is smashed in, but the glass isn't cracked and it still latches. Apparently it hasn't been oout of low range in years, and it won't go into high range. The 4 wheel drive shifter doesn't feel like it goes completely out of 4 wheel drive either. It looks like a bolt is missing from the oil pan and it's leaking pretty bad. Any quick fixes you can think of? Did I make a decent buy or is this just a mess not worth fixing? At a glance, it looks like it might be a good resto project? Is a '67 a good year for a resto project? Are parts expensive? I want a driver, to plow snow with, and perhaps to take to work a few days here or there. My original thoughts in buying were.... the plow is worth about $1,000. The Scout has to be worth $300.

Hi Doug,

Welcome to the BB and IHC madness!
I don't want to throw a wet blanket on your acquisition, but $1300 seems like a lot to pay for a Scout in that condition. Although, to be fair, I've paid more for less myself. The plow is probably worth more like $500, but if it suits your purpose for plowing snow, then it sounds like you got what you wanted.
You'll get more response to your tech questions if you post up over in the Tech Talk fourm.
Do you have any photos of your Scout you could share?

Roy

Welcome Doug!

You have to be mechanically inclined and like to hang out in junkyards, but if so, you can most likely get the old scout mechanically sound and up to the task of plowing fairly inexpensively. If the transfer case is not functioning correctly, you may be well ahead to pick another one up at the junk yard and just swap them. They are fairly plentiful and reasonably easy to change.

Regards,

Rex

Welcome Doug.

My best advice about the spending... don't ever add it all up. If you enjoy the restoration and Scouts - its worth every penny. There are a few other guys in Michigan that have them and might be good resources.

Check out the following link for others in Michigan:
