Default "Flashers" Problem

I recently installed an ez wiring harness and most everything is now working great. The only problem I keep having is the turn signals quit working from time to time. The turn signals will come on, but just wont flash. I can usually fix this by pulling out the flasher in the fuse block and putting it back or switching it with the one for the hazards. What is up with that? Has anyone ever had a similar issue? Could the flashers be at fault or something else? The grounds seem fine, and the bulbs are new too. Thanks for any advice...

You could start with the flasher. I had a similar action with my semi truck. The lights would come on solid. Then again, same flasher would sound like it was working, but the lights were speratic, and sometimes didn't light either. Put a new flasher in and it worked like it was suppose to.

In my 74 200 pickup, there were two different flashers. One slow one for turn signals, and a fast one for hazards. I also had a problem with my hazards that they didn't work, and they did before. During the tranny swap I had the dash apart for some new wiring, and noticed the one flasher bulb was off its little "claw" holder. So I pushed it back in and just recently was messing around and turned them on, and they worked. Wiring problem, maybe, but the flasher was off the holder so must need to ground thru? I think a guy can get by without the fast flasher and get a regular turn signal flasher(slower blinking). They're both 2 spade canisters so either one, either way will work. Hopefully its just a bad flasher for you, that way its a simple pop out, and pop in situation, that way its less headache.

your not running LED blubs are you? check the plug from the steering column for the turn signal harness make sure you have it pushed together all the way also check bulkhead connector if it was not replaced it may have corrosion. You can try the flasher from a vehicle you know works to make sure eveything is working right, i know there is something else just can't remember.

i was having the same problem and have LEDs in the back with a new electronic flasher unit. as long as the flasher is sitting with the plug side down it's fine. if it gets bumped sideways or "upside down" the signals stop flashing intermittently. PITA! gonna try a new flasher and make a mount for it under the dash. so far i have it wedged upright, so good to go.

thanks for all the responses! i do not have led's. i guess i will just get a new flasher and see if that fixes it, which i should have done in the first place. i just wanted to see if there was any other common problem with them. thanks again!

I cannot tell you guys how helpful these discussions are. My 1980 Traveler was having "turn signal problems," where they would flash too fast and I never heard the "tink, tink, tink." Then I read about the two flashers, the slow one and the fast one, and a little light bulb went off in my oft dark brain. So I went out to my Scout, switched the two flasher units, and voila! the turn signals flash at the correct speed, make the little "tink, tink, tink" noise, and the hazard flashers flash fast -- which I don't like. I think I'll get another turn signal unit to replace the flasher unit.

Thanks, guys!

ihscout conspiracy,

I have 3 EZWiring kits (1 installed, 1 scrap and 1 to be installed), and I have found that the falshers are not the best. I had both (turn and hazard) go out in 1 of my kits far too soon. They both went out because I switched them when 1 went out to get down the road.
The flasher are available in a wide range of applications.
What I mean is, you can get a "loud" flasher, slow, fast, med and even heavy duty,.. or at least the local Napa here has them like this.
I got tired of having to go back for new flashers for whatever reason, so the last time I replaced one (regardless of what vehicle I'm replacing it in) I go with the heavy duty unit.
The Heavy Duty Loud unit is part number: FL577
Hope this helps..

Had that problem for years. All I'd do is reach under the dash and flick the unit a few times and it'd be good for a month to a year. A month ago it quit again and the usual medicine didn't work so I actually stuck my head under to look at it. It was full of water. So, time for a new one.
