Default Re: Source for a cheap heater core?

I have never had a weak scout heater no matter what size the core.
I think you just need to get rid of all the air leaks in the floors and the ducts to make it more effective!!!

The optional IH self lightening program (rust) will have a big impact on your heat!!!

After some screwing around partly blocking the radiator with cardboard, I found Rockauto.com will be able to get me my core for $43 shipped. And it's shipped fast, should be here tonight. We'll see what inprovement it makes.

On my Scout IIs I leave the valve open all the time, summer and winter, and flip the air on and the fan for heat thereby using the heater core as additional coolant supply. Also the valve should be open when you refill and start up so as not to trap pressurized air in the heater core.

Default Bad News

My core arrived with a cracked solder joint on one of the hose connections. We'll see how their customer service is.

Default Heater Core update

After all testing of temps, flows, and thermostats, the (second) new core is in and pretty damn good and warm. Rock Auto dropped the ball a bit on the replacement as it shipped out the day it was supposed to arrive here. In any case I'm toasty warm now!!!

Due to my retirement from the Army in 2006 next winter I will likely be back home in the Montana area although we are looking at Sheridan Wyoming too. It might be nice to have more heat output although I've never thought my diesel scouts were short on heat.

Carey, did you ever fit the 2.5" core into the 2" heater box? I'd like a nuclear heater for driving topless on evenings in the fall. These cores are only $38 at O'reilly
2.5"
2"
Congrats on you retirement, BTW.

I remember seeing a thread detailing the larger heater core mod, too bad I can't remember who it was...
