"Hi Everyone, I'm Nick, and I have a 1980 Scout II with a 6 cyl nissan turbo diesel in under the hood. I have a coupla questions an' I was hopin' to get some answers. 1. Will any old scout II fuel gauge i get on ebay work with my diesel? 2. Will any old scout II power steering pump work with a diesel? 3. Speed liner or rhino liner? What's better? Any other options that are comparable? Perhaps something I can apply myself. Any and all suggestions are most appreciated. Thank you. Hope I can return the favor some day." ~Nick~ |

How much does a Scout with A turbo diesel engine cost? I'm looking at gettin a scout and would love to have a diesel... not specifically for towing just cheaper gas prices and DIESEL! lol

My scout was $1200 plus $900 I had to put into it right off the bat. So I currently have around $2100 in mine. I got a good deal though. My scout runs great, just no power steering so that will be an additional hundred or so. I think that there is one on ebay right now going for $2500. I would guess diesel scouts go for between $2000 to $5000.

, I have had good luck myself. )My truck has a replacement sending unit, chrysler type, and it works - sorta; At full the gauge reads 7/8 or 3/4. The gauge reads empty with 10 or more gallons left in the 33 gallon tank. Thats fine with me. 2. To the best of my knowlege, the scout II power steering pumps are the same, diesel or gas, HOWEVER, the manufacturer (Saginaw?) changed the hydraulic line fittings size and the holes they tap into at some point in the late '70s so early units are not compatible with late. A search in the tech talk section should reveal which model years match your truck. Also, save the mounting hardware from the old unit if you have it. 3. I used rhinoliner and got excellent results. -David

Before you spend your money for a Power Steering Pump for your Scout, make sure it's from an '80. The '80's used Metric fittings, unlike any other year of Scout.
One other thing I've noticed, is that the fuel guage on a gasser will have "Use Unleaded Fuel Only" on it, which is a moot point for us oil burners. "Non-essential jargon" Any other questions, ask away! Mike

Hey Mike,
On the last forum I posted you said I could ask all the questions I wanted. My Question is again about power steering pumps. Like I said in the Forum I need a power steering pump that will fit a 1980 scout II diesel. I read in a different forum that some scouts could actually use a common type of Chevy power steering pump as long as I remount the pulley and reservoir from that old one on to the new one. I wanted to know if this is true, or if I have to buy only a 1980 Scout II power steering pump. If I can use a Chevy power steering pump, what kind should I get? How should I remount the pieces? Are there any other pieces to remount? Thanks for your time, Nick |

I won't argue with the others here but I'm sure in my 80 ex diesel . I'm running the power steering pump the was stock in the 72 travelall the 392 came out of. i swapped in 84 or 85 so my memory is a little fuzzy.not sure what hoses i used. it worked fine though

First off let me welcome you to the oil burners world, I'm Ricky-you're Nick now we can talk like fellow diesel heads. As far as the power steering pump goes let me tell you a story. I pulled a steering gear box off of a 1980 Scout II to replace the one I had on my 1977 Scout II (mine was tapped for a hydraulic assist). The only think I noticed was that the hose connections on the 1980 gear box were different than the ends of the hoses on the 1977 pump. Other than that it was a bolt on swap and it worked perfectly. I'd say the only problem you might have if you get a pump from an earlier year model would be the hose ends. I just took mine down to NAPA and had all new hoses built. I hope this helps. Ricky 77
