Cool Project Rusty Buildup Thread!

Howdee all.

As of Febuary 2004, I have been planning and building a 1979 Scout II for the use of mild trails and daily driving I've been posting updates on other websites, but until now ~ I've hesitated to put any updates on the BB (due to the likelyhood of being accused of spamming).

Well now that I have my own forum, its time to let ya'll into what I've been doing.

Unlike my other buidups, this one is for daily driving and light trail use

Now that Snoopy is safe and sound at his new home, I've got no wheeler. Then, of course, the RMB crew started talking about the annual Moab trip.

At first I consigned myself to *utter* dispare, but life has been breathed back into my sails. First I'm going to say SORRY to the 80/800 crew. I'd love to build another Scout 800, but I've only got a Scout II....soooo....

Anyway, I was trying to sell this Scout, but the buyer backed out. Its a 79 SII, w/ a real powerfull 345 w/ 4bbl. The buyer wanted me to do some work to it before we let it go...and now that it has new steering, alt and heater ~ it seems he has completely backed out. ~ Oh well.

Here's a couple of begining pictures for you.

Here are the drawings for *Rusty* ~

Side view:

Top View (Base level w/ seats and tentative interior layout)

Top View (Upper tube structure only, this is just above the seats

These are had drawings, without rulers or anything like that ~ so go figure, they aren't to dimension.

More progress ~ I took the top off, but then the doors wouldn't shut.

....so I took the doors off and welded a bar in their place.

Its a lot quicker now ~ but seems to ride a little stiffer.

Oh, and it was a quick cure for the gasoline smell.

Well, I had a trail ride to get to on Saturday, so Friday brought some much needed mods to Rusty.

First was the stock roll bar (had to weld it in real quick :grinpimp: ) then threw a bikini top on there to protect me from the sun so I didn't get :mad3:

After that is was time to wheel!

Only got caught up once when the tires slipped off the rocks ~ but no worries, the rocker made room for the rock. :shaking:

Time for the build.

Step one: Figure out what tires you want to run.

Yupper, a 5-pack of 37x12.50x15 GY MTR's baby.

When anyone asked me what I was doing, I told them that I just bought a Scout, and wanted to remove all the rust.

Well, over the july 4th weekend I was able to start the tube work on Rusty. Things went pretty good. I laid out the tube work for the main cab area, and welded up a support bar (which also shows the angel of the tube boatsides. Then I welded up a rear extention where the fuel cell will be located.

The cell is from Sumit racing ~ its the foam filled, sumped, polyethelene,16 gallon cell w/ GM sending unit and aircraft style filler. And don't worry, I will be adding a floor under the cell ~ to give the bottom some support, but I did want to see how it fitted in its place!

Next I put in the main hoop on the cage and started its gussets.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with how its coming together.

If you're wondering why the support braces have a 23" gap between them (at the bottom) ~ its becuase I'm not sure if I'm going to add a third seat in the middle or not. The toss-up is:
1) make it a three seater for more passengers
or
2) Make it a two seater, and relocate the radiator back there.

The decission has been made to make it a 2-seater.

I got to work at 5 am today and got the rear section pretty much wrapped up. I haven't done the shock placement yet ~ so some bars are still missing until I get it to ride-height.

Ordered up some roll bar tap and padding ~ as well as an enclosed battery box from a circle track company ~ with that I'm going to start on the dash and interior (got my Baja Ultra SS's a couple weeks ago). So I'm going to be REAL freindly with my bender for the next week or so.
