Default I checked out John Wayne's Travelall today!

Nuthin better to do so I went to Laughlin,Nv.Went to the Riverside casino. The casino kinda sux(Chris<---lost money),lots of purty ladies though. On the 3rd floor they have an old /rare car museum. Many of the cars are for sale for extreemly balooned prices.

Anyway, saw John Waynes travelall and I must say that it is definatly a true Binder. They put oil drip pans under the engines of all of the cars, the Travelall had pans, trashbags and paper towels under the engine, trans, transfercase, front pumpkin and rear axle!
It's a 1200 series.

Its in good shape, there are some paint bubbles along the rear fenders and the rocker panels, the chrome has some dings....nuthin too bad though.

Has some weird hubs on the front axle, you pull 2 levers then turn them 90 deg to lock the hubs....weird,probly never break them though.

The hood was shut so I couldn't I.D. the exact engine size, has the canister oil filter on it still.

The rear axle is the I.H. drop out,the front is a d-44.

Ps.Dont get cought attempting to scrape the grease off of the
diff ratio tag using a dollar token .

They must have cameras everywhere and are pretty quick to ask why your snoopin so much ,then security follows you around for the rest of your stay....lol.

Not wierd, WARN. You saw the precursor to the single knob twist style. I transferred a set of those from a '56 Willys jeep station wagon to a '42 MB, later they went on a '68 Kaiser CJ-5 (V-6). The dual lever style was prone to being cranky on one lever of the pair not engaging without rocking the truck a fair bit. Leastwise that was my own experience The alternative at the time was a set of hubs made from an original splined set with the splines turned out. Iffen you check the Warn site out they have a history on their design progression.

At the time the dual lever were a real god send as the alternative was pulling a hub, getting the axle end splines *and* the hole patterns on the axle aligned and bolting back up, typically in the field up to the eye brows in mud or snow. with them.

Matter of fact, the 1st Warn hubs were nothing more than the axle end caps with the splines turned out. One bought a set and got 2 pair of caps, 1 splined, 1 with the splines turned off and nicely chromed. There was a write up about this in one of the 4 wheel rags a while back, the ones I used were "home made" knock offs. Even at $.25/gal for gas, running with "locked hubs" 100% of the time was expensive for a teenager on a limited budget...

I also noticed that the engine oil pan had the 1/2x20 drain bolt.Shouldn't a 66'have the large 3/4 thread bolt? Both of my 68's had the large drain bolts and my 73 has the small one.

Wonder if the engine was changed out at one time.I bet it has some steep gears in the axles, the info board say's that they removed the 4sp and replaced it with a 5sp.Didn't get too specific but I bet it's the overdrive trans?

those hubs you saw , are really strong locking hubs. had to pull a lot of them apart back in the days of working on old j%&p restoration. strong and simple.

Default That's quite a travelall, pilgrim!

Chris-

The travelall is pretty much a stock 1200A with all the factory options, as near as I could tell. (aside from the raised roof, of course) The wheels were camper special type, 16.5" non-split. They did a horrible job painting the travelall up for display. White paint on the valve stems, lug nuts, etc. Black paint on the power steering ram, including the chrome ram shaft. (if that's not an idiotic thing to do, nothing is). The winch bumper looked to be factory. I have two of them exactly like it. PTO winch was either a Ramsay or Warn, but nothing unusual.

I noticed that they had bondo'd the cracked place at the top of the tailgate window where nearly every C series travelall cracks. The paint had chipped off there, along with a small chunk of bondo. Helena spotted that right away, and we got a good laugh out of it.

I thought this was a 304 equipped travelall, but at this point, I can't tell you why I thought that. I really wanted to look at the door tag and copy the VIN, pull the line set ticket to see what was original and what was added. I lacked the testicular fortitude.

The raised roof and "tall" doors make this a pretty desirable rig, even if John Wayne hadn't owned it. There was one in Tulare in '99 that had tool boxes along the bottom of the rear quarter glass that I would have rather had, if John Wayne was taken out of the issue. Until I saw the John Wayne travelall in person, I thought both of these unusual 1200A travelalls were the same, but they are definately not.

Hey Allan,

I pick up "flyash"(a cement additive) at the electric plant there often,This was the first time I actully stopped there, next time I go there I'll see if I can get the vin #.There was a guy that worked there that would open doors and such if you asked him too.I'll slip him a fin for the vin #.

I'm curious about the options it has too.

You did a good job on that Travelall I have seen specs and pics but never in person. I never knew where it was but now that I know its just in Vegas (Laughlin..but not far from Vegas) I'll go see that sucker this summer!

The only thing you missed was the second big Mod on the vehicle:

The Top! It has a giant sunroof like thing that opens to shoot through on saffaris (sp?).

Thx again for the post!

(I'm going thru old post not re-posting in anybody wonders ..only 20 more pages to go b4 I have read this BB from the beginning! You gotta love your Govt tax dollars at work! )
