Remove screws, etc. at filler neck on rear exterior panel. Jack up one back corner of truck--enough to get wheel off the ground. Support frame with jackstand(s) while jacked up. Lower slightly onto jackstand(s) for stability. Remove wheel. Remove "rock-guard panel" protecting tank from rocks thrown off of wheel (this panel is "long gone" on some 80/800s) Disconnect fuel line. Disconnect sending unit wire. Unbolt tank from underneath. Slide tank back and jockey it around inside wheel well until it can be positioned such that it'll come out of wheel well. Repeat on other side. The point is that I have to have the wheel removed and the axle/brake drum assembly drooping down as much as possible to fanagle the disconnected tank out of the wheel well space. If there's a way to do it without "drooping the axle", it's news to me. Oh yeah, you might want to take a look at the Old Dominion Binders Association forum here on the BB. There are a whole lot of nut cases, errr, I mean Binder fans, right in your part of VA. We need more 80/800 guys, too, so come on out and join us some time. We're gathering at James River State Park on 10/29-31 for a campout, trail rides, and lots of eating and lying. There will be at least my '65 and another Raleigh boy's 800a there representing the "Little Refrigerator" crowd. From the "Farm use" tags on the ODBA crowds' trucks, you'd think you were coming to a Grange convention. Foy

I used loads of WD-40 and worked mine in and out, until they finally gaulled up and I ended up twisting off. Being fine threaded it doesn't take much for thread bind to become a problem. If one or more did get to the point they didnt want to come out before twisting off I would recommend removing the bolt head in a safe manner, which would give you something to work with when trying to remove the offending bolt remains once the tank is out of the truck. Both of mine twisted off flush with the mount I spent about 2 hours getting my two busted off bolts out of my tank Be sure and use some grease or antisieze on the bolts when reinstalling them so 30+ years from now maybe the next guy won't have as much fun as I did Wish ya luck!!!

Gentlemen:
Are there threads in the bottom of the tank or is there a strap that a standard bolt goes through to compress on the tank? Are the bolts on the bottom? How many? Thanks. |

The ones that are standard bolts don't concern me if they break but the ones that are threaded into the bottom of the tank sound delicate.

If these bolts break off while being removed, they can be drilled out or "Easy-outed" after the tank is removed. I've done this with both tanks on my 800A and broke one bolt on each side despite liberal application of penetrating oil. Roy

I'm glad you guys brought this up as I'm also working on my 800B tanks for our FI setup. I just want to confirm-those bolts are fine thread? I'm always glad I cruise this board, always pick up something useful. I also twisted off evry head on mine-you better belive they are going back in with anti-seize and some lockwashersto keep them from backing out.
Don't want to go through that again.
