Smile My Scout II/800 Project

I have a 76 Scout II frame/axles, and managed to save a fairly low rust Scout 800 body from the crusher. The 800 body is rough, not restoration quality, and has been cut in half right across the body in front of the seats. It was cut cleanly with a sawzall, so I will try to weld it back together with my Lincoln 3200 MIG.

I have a 304 that I saved, but after a few weeks of soaking the cylinders, I have given up on unsticking it. I pulled the pan and found a broken piston skirt, but I see no other obvious damage.

I am looking around for an engine. I may even use a 4 cylinder if the price is right.

I have 2 tranny choices.

I have a 727 trans and a D20, but I need an adapter to hook them together.

I have a 3 speed manual trans already hooked to the D20, but I need a flywheel and clutch disc/plate for it.

This has to be a low/no budget project since money is tight and we have no spare cash for "another" project. I have two projects under construction now, a 73 Travelall 2wd running driving project, and a 72 Scout II 4x4 running driving all stock street only project. (NO woods for that truck)

This will be a woods/mud/hunting/beater truck that will not see much if any road time. I see welded diffs, SOA axles, and a 33 inch tire. Full roll cage, no doors, and a bikini top.

Ill update here as this project evolves.

Any input is welcome.

I like the budget, sounds like mine. If I had to get an adapter for a TF727 to a dana 20, I'd probably change to the jeep style rear housing so I could get one of those $100 jeep D300 with the better gears. If you want to stick with the D20 though, talk to david hicks in b'ham, he probably has the adapter laying around. I have access to a free 345 that I know nothing about other than it rotates, if that is an option for your engine. I'd hate for you to waste a trip to tuscaloosa though to get an engine that may be no better than the one you have.

Good luck,
Brent

Never done this and this is my first scout. already have a good 304. trans needs rebuilt. all but drive shafts if I use the axels off the I-6. If your interested let me know. Just a thought .

Hey Mike,

I will be picking up the Scout II from Larry Vaughn on the 24/25 of this month, he has several trans/transfer/clutch options I was looking at for the diesel conv. on the 80, also a gentleman named Vince who works for D & C Extreme (lost his #), had a T-19W/D-20 w/ all clutch including linkage for $300.
I have since found another 800 near here in someone's yard, 196/4-speed/D-20, I don't even have a place to put it but I'm going to pick it up in a couple of weeks anyway, the top is pretty rusted but that is about it, if you know anyone who needs glass for a 800 top I will have some soon to give away.

Miss my uuhm, your Travelall by the way

Phnman,
Thank you for the offer, I really appreciate it, but I want to stay IH 4 or 8.
Its much easier than trying to drop in an AMC 6.
Ive never done an AMC 6 SII, and I dont even know if the 6 will fit under the SII/800 Project hood without firewall mods. Might be too long.

Kendall,
The Travelall says hello. She got new brakes all around, tires, front brake hoses (cant find rear), and a tie rod end. Ball Joints next.
Where did that (NEW?) center link come from? Its bad too.
She just got a new receiver slide, and towed the SII/800 Project body home Sat.
Tows like your not even pulling anything.
Im wrestling with myself (?) about cutting the perfect dash for my AM/FM/CD player.
Its current laying on the tranny hump, and doesnt look good/isnt secure.
Either that or I have to build a console.

Tom,
There is an 800 A V8 frame and complete blue tub/body laying over at David Bowen's place. The body is kinda rough, but its FREE. Will be scrapped soon. If you drive by, you can see it from the road. I have his # if you want me to email it to you.

Dont forget Tim Stilwell's V8 800. He said a while back that its GOT TO GO. Make him an offer. Need his #?

FREE 800 A, B parts. Doors, windows, fenders, hood, tailgate, seats, steering, dash, frame, etc. No axles/engine/trans/top.
One week only, then gone. Contact me for the owner info. Parts are here in Mobile.

Yes, please send me the numbers on the stuff here in Mobile.. Probably easier for me to get it home than the one across the way. Isn't Tim the one in Daphne? Or call me.. I'll be out for an hour or so, but will be home later.
