Default 1980's Jeep wagoneer Axles Scout 800 Swap

I did some searching but couldn't find much on the subject. If someone were to provide a link to a build than that will help. Could be I missed something in the search.

So I might pick up my buddies 1966 scout 800. I thought it was an 80 but turns out it's the same year as mine. I was considering going with his 6.2 diesel swap idea but if I get it I'm most likely going to go with a ford 302 and e4od transmission. I bought a 93' bronco to swap the guts to from my wrecked 86' bronco with a 6.9 idi. So I'm going to have a 302 with 147,000 miles on it as well as a good transmission lying around. Now of coarse that leaves me with a drivers side drop problem. So my idea is to pull a drivers drop dana 44 out of an early 80's wagoneer and naturally the rear as well. I'm aware of what is involved with a scout 2 dana 44 swap but not jeep 44's. Anybody know what difficulties are involved here? Any special problems with the swap? Thanks.

I'm sorry if ford and jeep stuff in a scout bothers anybody. I'm just trying to save the scout from possibly being crushed, so I think it is a good alternative .

The waggy rear is soa and the front is sua, spring hangers/ perches need changed. If you can think and weld it ain't that hard. The waggy width is nice under an 800\80 and flat tops with Chevy brakes

Thanks for the reply. Luckily I can think, and weld. I've never tried both at the same time though, could be messy...

I know that on the scout 2 dana 44 front end the passenger side perch is a machined part of the gear housing. Is it the same on the wagoneer? If so than I might just do the same ford coil spring front suspension I'm doing on my other scout by buying the bronco wedges and forget messing with that perch. I seem to have a lot of ford parts around for that kind of thing.

Pretty sure the Waggy axle has the perch as part of the casting, I know the pass drop versions do.

Off hand I can't remember the spring spacving on a Waggy but IIRC it's pretty close.

There is a kit that's bolt on to make the FSJ axles SOA. I think it's TTFabworks

With the E4OD trans and it's Borg Warner t case, you rear driveshaft will be about 16inches long. I wouldn't consider a SOA practical with that short a shaft.

My plan is to use a ford np205 that I have in the garage. I can't remember how much shorter it is than the BG t case, 7" maybe? But it should be enough to make up for the extra length of the e4od wouldn't you think? I can always keep the front spring under and make the rear spring under. I don't care either way because my tire size will be 30's and it's not going to be doing anything serious off road.

Pretty sure the 205 will gain some length on the shaft. But if you don't plan a lift even the short shaft should be ok. It's the angles of the u joints that get to be a problem and the angles grow faster with a shorter shaft per any amount of lift.

I don't see anything wrong with either case as long as you keep em full of oil.

Well, scratch the 302 idea. Someone went and gave me a free motor tranny combo. I don't think length will be a problem anymore. The np435 is a short transmission.

205 cases are clockable and there's no need to stay driver's side drop
