Thanks wrench man!! Didn't know what it was on there, but I could tell it wasn't a stock axle. How you managed to id it from that one pic is beyond me But hey, you guys are the experts!

He can tell because the center section is symmetrical, not egg shaped like a Dana 44....let me see if I can find some pics.

Dana 30 diff cover gasket



Dana 44 diff cover gasket



And a Dana 30 open knuckle would be the stock axle for a 73-74 Scout II, I think they swapped to the Dana 44 in 75.

ah ha! That makes perfect sense... I have a 75 and it has the 44... So next question, Should I keep the 30? I hear that they were weak and that's why they changed to the 44. But can I just change the gearing or the whole axle

If it isn't broke, don't fix it, or, there is no reason to change it until there is a reason to change it. What are you planning on doing with the Scout? What size of tires?

As far as the gearing goes you can change just the gears, as long as you change them in the front and the back, they have to match.

I plan on this scout being my hunting and off-road scout. I'm 27 so getting into hairy places is a given tire size is going to be 33's I think...
