Default Charcoal canister failure

I keep smelling fuel vapor when I have more than a 1/4 tank of fuel in the tank. My liquid/vapor separator was leaking and I fixed that but still smell fuel. Sniffing around under the hood, there was a strong smell around the charcoal canister so I took it out to inspect it. The bottom filter fell out and all the charcoal drained out. The piece that holds the charcoal in had crumbled apart.
Now what? If I tie the carb vent to the tank vent I assume I will have no fuel system ventilation and the system will pressurize when hot.
I can't find a direct replacement canister. Are there any current production units that can be made to work?

There should be tons of direct replacement cannisters in any wrecking yard that stocks cars and trucks from the 90's and earlier it is a GM unit and the exact same one as used in a ton of GM, AMC and many European cars from the era.

bazillion on ebay and lots of autoparts stores, its a gm item.

but why replace it?
stuff the vacuum hose from intake manifold that went to the charcoal can directly to the vent hose from gas tank.
leave the can there in place in case you have to fool the smog nazis.
