Default Weekend report 7-28-2012

I almost lost my power steering belt while working the scout pretty hard at the hunting lease. I took the old belt with the number on it to the new auto zone right by my house. To my surprise, the guy could not use the part number from the belt that I had convienently cleaned for him, but he needed to know the vehicle from which it came. I explained that it would not help him and that if he could just replace the gates part #, I would be ok. He explained he would need the year make and model to help me, so I told him it was a power steering belt for a 1970 International Scout. After he wasted 5 minutes of my time looking for that, he determined that he would use the cross reference, and that they didn't have it. After that, I made him check on the front rotors, pads, power brake booster as well as the robertshaw thermostat, and every other modification that I have made that don't exist just to get back at the genius. I hope I wasted as much of his time as he wasted of mine...

A simple measurement of the old belt is all that is needed.

Auto Parts Stores have a tool that measures the belt length & 'V' width.

Takes about 10 seconds or less.

I had an extended weekend. Worked on Saturday at a property a buddy of mine and I are cleaning up for some folks - laid low in the evening. Sunday went to Asheville to spend the day and evening (Tasha's B-day) - yesterday, took the day off and went tubing down the French Broad for about 3-3.5 hours - got roasted by the sun because we didn't expect it to be so clear, but it was. Very relaxing time, nonetheless. No IH, other than spotting a SII at an Advance Auto off Hendersonville Hwy. in Skyland.

Even Autozone's website has a search for competitor's part numbers, or at least it did....and as mentioned, if that failed, the old measuring stick for belts should come out. Counter guys don't last long there, seems like as soon as they start to catch on they move to a 'real' parts store.

drove the scout out to a buddys house Sun. to help with his 71' scout he just picked up. we worked on changing all the brakes, tune up, oil change's, belts and hoses. hour each way with no problems. It's funny the looks you get from people when they see a bright orange scout riding around.

Been working my butt off lately, but I have put a little IH time in. However I got a little frustrated on the Scout and took a break and started checking over the Travelall. Something interesting I found in the ash tray. All I can make out is "World 600" time trials, motor speedway. I imagine these old IH's could tell some stories.

Mike, the World 600 was at Charlotte (Lowes) Motor speedway. That race was called the World 600 from 1960 to 1984. It was then changed to the Coke 600. Judging by the price
(2.00) It was probably a ticket for qualifying. Cool stuff

I stoped and spoke to the guy at Advance Auto and told him to look this place up that it would make his life a lot easier. I didn't get into much over the weekend other than family stuff. I drove the travellet to a buddies house down the street to help with his bike. I havent ventured to far with it since it's not tagged or insured. I did see a scout II up at Mills River camp ground on Sunday.

Later,
TR
