two speed rear ends of that vintage generally have never been serviced. Open the small square cover on the unit - you will have to make a gasket to put it back together. do not use RTV!] and you will discover it is dry. Squirt some ATF around in there and try moving the parts. IT uses only a little atf or 10 wgt oil - there is a mark. If that is not it, trace wires and check the circuits.
Shifting: Driving the truck empty, you can drive it in high range exclusively. With a load or in the hills, shifting the diff is useful.

I agree with the others that it likely has a 2 speed rear since he said he disconnected the wire. As Doc mentioned it likely hasn't been messed with in well forever and a disassemble, cleaning and re-lubing may be all it needs. If it is needs more they are pretty simple and without a load running in high is the standard operating procedure. In the flat land running in high all the time may be doable too depending on just how heavy the load is.
There are also auxiliary 2 speed transmissions but they have a mechanical shift lever. |

A 2 speed rear has a small DC electric motor that actuates a reduction mechanism. In that vintage (same as I have) it is best shifted while moving. If the electric motor is bad it can be rewound. It is the same basic design that's in the 2 speed units all the way up to the 1980s. I have that exact rear in my L184. My brakes are different....heavier unit....you should have less of an issue finding parts as I did.
One thing to note is that you will almost certainly have an unsynchronized transmission. Not a problem if you find that quaint and are interested in learning how to shift it. I won't decide that for you! Maybe you already can!!! However, you will not enjoy learning how to shift it and the 2 speed rear at the same time. Not to worry. You can swap in a "more modern" synchronized 4 or 5 speed transmission. Then, 2 speed operation is a piece of cake. You probably have a bellhousing that will already take the synchronized 4 speed transmissions (T98, T18, T19) and you could find one for the T3x 5 speeds. You are in much better shape finding that on your side of the country than around here (east coast). IMO, you might use it more if you do that swap. You might never use the 2 speed rear. In low, the reduction is super low (8.xx). I can see that from the pics it has the common grill rustout under the headlights/turn lights. The L150-up grill is taller and you might have difficulty finding a good unrusted used one. The turn lights are the same as the R series and Scout 80/800s from 1961-68. Brakes, turns and grill are really the only parts bugaboos about larger LRS trucks. I guess wiring might be another but it is so simple you could rewire it in a day. In general, that looks like a really nice truck. I'd make an attempt myself if it were close to me.
