Welcome to the boards..... Good looking Scout.

What part of SD are you in? I am in Scripps Ranch and have a 65 and a 71.

I''ve seen that Scout online before....can't think of who/where I saw it. Looks to be in really nice shape.

You aren't going anywhere fast in a '62 Scout, but it should at least be able to get out of it's own way. Great for cruising around town or the back country, but not 70MPH highway.
A tune up and change ALL the fluids would be my first step.

+1 on those rear brake lines is there a rubber hose between the axle and frame?

What a cool Scout! I predict that you'll have a lot of fun with it. (Once you do up the brakes like the other folks said!)

I'm also in San Diego, and I humbly suggest that you join Scouts West. They're a great group of guys and a good resource for parts, advice, field trips, etc.

Radar- thanks for your help and ideas. I've already ordered a full tuneup kit from RockAuto.
I'll be doing points, condenser, cap, wires, plugs, rotor, coil. After I saw how bad the points were corroded, I'm not taking a chance, just replacing it all. While it is all very clean, I have no clue how old those parts are on the engine.

Also, there is a rubber line on the rear brake lines. It's not hardline plumbed to the axle! haha

I just saw this Scout on my local San Diego Craigslist, never anywhere else online.
I'm in Bay Park specifically, which is right by mission bay, just east of the bay on the hill above the 5 fwy. Looks like there's a good San Diego crowd on here!?

Anyways, I'll keep you guys posted. I'll have the tune up parts here by Friday I think and I"ll get it done and running well. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks!
Evan

Hah. I'm in Clairemont, about two miles north of you. Just off Moraga, near CM Blvd.

Hey man, what's your VIN#?
You have the only other '62 Scout I've seen with a rear D-44.
Real curious to know if there is an A at the end of your VIN#
I don't have a LST yet
but that may indicate an axle upgrade...
While you're at it add you info to rlireland's VIN thread.

Awesome! That's great to know. Any chance you're familiar with the 152, and want to give me a hand with a tuneup and dialing in timing, dwell, and points? I'd love a second opinion on this bogging issue I'm having. It completely kills the drive-ability of this nice rig.

I'll be working on it Friday evening and all weekend.

Hey Radar,

Yes, there is an 'A' at the end of the VIN, I just checked. What does that mean? Can you give me the low-down on the D-44?

Welcome!
The A at the end of your VIN indicates the GVW. Some titles show the A at the end, and some don't. I think it just depend on who was typing the title info.
The Dana 44 rear was an option on the Scout 80. You're lucky to have it; as it was pretty rare. It looks like yours is the offset pumpkin version--is that correct? That one was used on the Scout 80s since the rear output of the Spicer 18 transfer case is also offset to the passenger side. I see you also have the even rarer version with the attached cat paws and tail! I may have an extra set of those unequal-length axleshafts if you want more parts to store! As others have pointed out, that brake line ain't right!
Your burned points may be due to an incorrect ignition coil. The coil should have a resistance of 1.8 ohms, and there should also be a ballast resistor in the circuit. Sometimes people will install a "hot rod" coil which has too low a resistance. That combined with the long dwell of the Delco distributor will burn up points quickly.

I'm not completely sure myself.
Still trying to figure it all out. Like G. Womack said, D-44s were an option but every where I read that, passenger side diff offset is also mentioned for the D18 transfer case.
I have a D18 but a centered diff D44... No cat tail or paws.
No one I've asked about the "A" seems to directly relate that to the D44 up grade. Just GVW.
