Sometimes the axle shaft flanges have a 7th hole drilled and threaded so you can screw in a bolt to pop the shaft loose. You will probably need to pull the axle shafts anyway to do an R&R on the rear brakes.

For parts, I'd start by browsing around the website for Super Scout Specialists, and also check out the other advertisers on here. Locally, NAPA is usually a decent bet. Don't expect them to stock much of anything in the store but within a day or two you can probably get the typical tune-up stuff. There are certain parts which can be a real struggle but if you ask on here (see the classifieds section) you'll find there are packrats around the country that can supply you. These are very practical trucks; I'm no mechanic, but so far I have done all of the mechanical work on my IH all by myself. Keep in mind that, depending on gearing, that truck may not be much good at modern highway speeds. Maybe not a concern, and something you could change if it is.

I've had fair luck finding some parts at Rockauto. They are easy to deal with and have a very good return policy. http://www.rockauto.com/
Binder Books can also get you the Line Setting Ticket for your truck. Lots of good info on what your truck came from the factory with. The LST might also be taped to the top of your glovebox (the outside- up under the dash). 2 purchases I'll never regret are the shop manual and parts catalog. They'll save you lots of time and money. The shop manual has terrific illustrated step-by-step instructions for almost any repair you can make to the truck. Binder Books has them, but I got my greasy, crusty parts catalog off ebay for about half. Nice find! Can't wait to see your progress Gary

Welcome! I as well am fairly new to this awesome forum. In my short tenure I have had 2to issues that the vast IH knowledge from this group has helped me through expertly. One if the places I have sourced parys from is ihonlynorth.com. I havr just started a build of a 79 scout and found performance parts on the kind of expensive side. But I love my scout as it brings back childhood memories of wheeling on the rubicon. Good luck and again welcome.
