Let me rephrase AN INTERNATIONAL SCOUT mechanic. (I believe there is a big difference) Ive gone through 8 Scouts and have thrown them all away because the engines are ****(never got a good one and nobody could ever get one to run properly) I should really just swap in a chevy, but don't know where to start To be honest, I am very tired of working on these nonstop. Any help would be greatly appreciated |

Wow. I have had four Scouts and I have never lost one to an engine!
My advise? Buy this, or one like it. http://www.superscoutspecialists.com...78-80-new.aspx Between that and Binder Planet, there hasn't been a single question that has EVER gone unanswered, and quickly at that.

Oops, I left out the link, so I edited my previous post to include it.
These books are our bible, and even if you don't do the work yourself, they will include very valuable information to any mechanic. If you need to take your Scout into a shop, let them borrow it even!

The info on the engine part should not have changed through the years right?
Reason I ask is that I have a scout manual but its for the 800 800 models. However 345s were put in there. Will that book work or do i need to drop another $100. Understood that i should have it anyway, but I'm sick of dropping money. |

What kind of problems have you had?
Other than timing off of #8 vs. #1 and timming gears instead of a chain. They are pretty basic. A lot on International dealers still have an old mechanic that has been there 30+ years and would more than likley do some work on the side.

I must say that some is my fault for not thoroghly doing my research. I purchased pertronix through eBay because it was quick, easy, affordable, and I could not find many other places. I went with their compatability list and they sent me the 1482. That model is only for some huge Intl engines from the 60's. I need a 1481 apparently. Some dumb *** mechanic that came over to help starting grinding away on the bracket to make the vacuum advance fit; leaving me no way to return it. I put in new points and boom, it fired back up no prob. The prob I'm dealing with now should be pretty easy.
After new points and condenser, should I need to mess with the carb? It sounds great with my foot in it slightly, but as soon as i let go, she dies immediately. Actually, I need to clarify. I swithed out distributor too. I had Prestolite and switched to IHC points distributor as well. I just can't keep her at idle. I don't think I should need to crank on the idle screw, but hey I don't really know. Thats why I need a mechanic. Believe me, I'd rather do it myself and learn more, but I don't want to make it worse |

If you are looking for a shop that works on IH then IH Only North is just down the hill from you in Grass Valley, Less than an hour from Truckee and they know their stuff better than anyone else, they also are easy access for parts.
