Default 1200 Gas Tanks

I need to drop the gas tank from my '69 1200 PU. The tank is located under the passenger side of the cab, retained by a couple of straps.

Question... How do I release the fuel pickup and gauge wiring before I drop the tank? I'd guess there is the usual ring of screws and pull the pickup, etc, but where do I gain access to do this? Do I have to remove the seat? If so, how's that done? Don't see anything obvious..

You have to drop the tank to get access, drop the back to the ground, then you can unhook the wires and hoses

Put your floor jack under the tank with a board to spread the load. Release the straps and the rubber filler hose. Lower the tank enough to get at the wires.

Early round bodies had a sender access cover in the floor under the seat base that's easily seen. Later ones did not and has to be done as mentioned.

Needless to say, but drain as much fuel as you can first. If you do this, the tank can be (most likely)handled by one person. I just did this a few weeks ago on my '64 1100. You might want to invest in a new fuel sending unit while you're at it. Better to do it now while you have the tank down. Have fun.

I for got to mention that the gap between the tank and the body seems home to a of
lot of black widows, got to get in there with some spider spray first...

Is the tank sending unit an available part?

Thanks to all for the info.

Just tried removing the fuel take from a '64 C1000 last weekend. It is a real rust-bucket and when I got about 1 turn loosening the strap bolts, the nuts up in the rockers must have broke loose, and the bolts just started spinning without coming loose.

I see no way to access the nuts other than to cut out the surrounding sheet metal (after I cut the bolt heads off and drop the tank, of course).

Has anyone ran into this problem? Are there any better ways to fix it?

Thanks,

How rusty are the rockers and floor pan around the two bolt holes? I would guess that if the nuts have rusted out, then there is more going on under the skin, rust-wise. Cuttting the sheet metal sounds like the best way to proceed.

Rust prevails all around the rockers and floorboards, so new metal is needed just about everywhere, but the metal around where the strap bolts are located seem to be pretty solid. It won't hurt my feelings to cut these areas out, but it is not my truck (cleaning and sealing the tank for a friend), and I just wanted to make sure there were no alternatives before I got out the cutoff wheel....
