Can't start engine with key.

Bought my first scout and loving it. I am new to scouts and need any help anyone can offer. Can’t wait to complete project and take family out with the top off. It is a 1974 scout ii 345 engine. I got new ignition cylinders because when I bought it, it was not running nor had any keys. It is now running but when I turn key, it feels normal at first but as I continue turning it is very loose and does not start truck. After taking off steering wheel and steering column cover, I see a rod that connects to “starter switch”. If I push the rod down with a screw driver it starts the truck. Anybody have any idea what’s wrong/broken and how to fix it? Thanks for any help!

That rod connects to the switch as you said, the switch is adjustable. Mounted on the top of the column under the dash, 2 screws need to be loosened and the switch will adjust up and down the column. That should fix your problem, if it does not the gear and rod asembly in the column may be worn out, but try adjusting the switch first.

Thanks Ron. I will try adjusting it. However, I think the gear may be worn. The key has some resistance at first and then suddenly is loose. How do I remove gear and rod and where can I get a new one?

Well it's a Saginaw column Any "good" parts store should be able to get them. Just find a parts store that is willing to look it up in a book not a computer. I am sure any of the vendors listed here on this forum would be glad to help you also.
