Default Toqureflight 727 ????

Hello guys, I thought I would pick the Southeastern regions brains on the Toqureflight 727 transmission. I own a 1977 Scout II 345 V8 4 barrel with the TF and dana 20 T-case. My question is from what i have been reading in 1978 Chrysler went to a lock up style trans and in 1981 it was a lock up style with the "wide ratio" whick included a 2.74 1st gear instead of a 2.45 1st gear. Has anyone put a later wide ratio lock up trans in there Scout? Will this work??? Thanks In advance..
Josh

Your 727 has a different case than the chrysler ones, they will not bolt up to the engine

Bill talked about doing it in this thread a while back but I don't think he ever actually did it. You would have to get all of the parts from a newer 727 and rebuild your IH case with them.

I just talked to the transmission guru around these here parts and he said stick with the non lock up! He said the lock up converter was not as strong for pulling and off roading, however it would save some on gas. lol Now I did not ask about swapping the gear sets out, I might ask that when I drop mine off to be rebuilt.

This sounds like a cool option, I am sure you can get an upgraded converter for these transmissions that will handle anything and IH motor can put out. Check out TSR Transmissions or PATC transmsissions. A lock out option would be cool.

I'm going to guess that the lower gear sets are in the TF 904 (which is commonly called Torqueflite 6 vs. the 727 which is known as the TF 8). It's a lighter duty trans than the 727 and if the gears would swap I don't know if they'd hold up. If the later 727 used lower gears there wouldn't be very many of the later transmissions left to pick from cause between all of the four wheelers as well as muscle car guys that would love to have a lower first gear, they'd have been scabbed up by now.

The Carl Monroe Book says that all 727 came with the same gear ratio. There is no such thing as a low gear 727. I have heard that a couple of companies make an aftermarket kit but nothing came stock with a lower gear ratio.
