Default motorcraft carb hot start

My son has a motorcraft 2100 2bbl on the 304 in his 71 pickup. It runs perfect. Problem is hot starts, it acts as though it is flooded. Thinking heat soak like the edelbrock carbs have, I replaced the base gasket with the thick felpro one for holley 2300. No better. I have a feeling the problem lies in the design of the carb, in that the fuel enters the bottom of the bowl, too close to the hot intake manifold. Need some advice from you guys that love these carbs. if I had a decent holley here, I would swap it and be done.

I am not sure this is going to be much help but I had the same carb on my scout and I did not have your problem. I sometimes find a hard starting warm motor on my IH has too much timing at the distributor. Do you know where it is set at? Also my carb had about a 1/4" thick gasket between the carb and the manifold and it seemed to do o.k. The motorcraft is a great carb for cheap on an IH motor....

Good luck....

The gasket I used was Walker brand for 2100 and was close to 1/2 inch thick. No hot start issues even in 100+ degree weather. But that was a 258 vs. your SV.

Definetely not timing related. Truck will start if pedal held to the floor. I will find a thicker carb gasket and give it a shot.

I ran a motorcraft for a while. The heat issues drove me to fuel injection.

I would get a phenolic spacer, it's 1'' thick (wood material) and does a great job of reducing temps. I was able to get my carb around 60deg cooler than the manifold with it. If you're fuel is heating up in the bowl and not entering the bowl already too hot, that will fix your problem.

As a matter of fact, I may still have mine laying around here. You can have it if you pay for shipping. (assuming I can find it!)
