Had a talk with the Machine shop today and it didn't go very well.

He didn't want to press my guides in, he wanted to put bronze sleeves in them instead. Said pressing in guides was too much work and sleeves would last longer and cost less. Honestly, I still don't understand how it would be difficult to press in new valve guides. Not sure whether he wanted to sell me his parts or what.

Second, He can't mill the intake or exhaust side of the heads, nor the intake manifold. He says they're a production shop and just don't have the equipment to perform an angled mill. He said I need to find someone with a "Bridgeport". I'm not going to take the time to get a valve job and good cleaning and then have to find someone else to mill it after that so I just left.

I'm going to hold off on everything until I make a few calls. I just didn't feel comfortable after that conversation and think this work would be better suited for a performance shop. I have a lead on a guy about 30 miles from here. I'm going to give him a buzz and see what he knows about a SV.

Texas chassis works is in Tyler.
Ken that's on Drag racing Time show owns it.
They do all kinds of performance builds so they would have to know where to go.

Wow, how do you know more about Tyler than I do? Never even heard of'em. Website looks pretty cool.

I'll give them a buzz tomorrow.

Thanks

These are the guys who did my engine, they also machined the blown 345 on youtube. The shop is near chicago, but they take shipments. Last time i was there they had a big block from the middle east.

That's looks like a pretty sweet shop!

I've done a little research and spoke to a few places this morning. The guy I like the most can't do everything. He's been rebuilding heads and repairing cast for 30 years but that's about it. He's also got a milling machine that will do just about anything I need to the heads and/or the intake manifold.

The shop I mentioned a couple posts ago was recommend to me again, unfortunately he called my motor an AMC!!. He's about 30 miles south and does only performance builds. However, he has all his cranks ground @ Mabbco the original place.

SOOOO, before it's all said and done, I may be getting the heads, block, and crank done at 3 different places. Still waiting on a call back from Texas Chassis Works and place called Ray's engine, we'll see how it all comes together.

Update and issue to work out.

Today I worked on my bearing caps and rods.

1. Mains: I cleaned and bolted up my caps to the block, torqued them down and pulled out the bore gauge to check them for taper or out of round condition. Everything came out pretty good there, Cylinder 1 is at .00025 and Cylinder 5 is .0005 out of round but within spec.

2. Rods: as mentioned previously, I had the machine shop check the rods for bending or twisting and everything passed. I needed to finish the inspection and check for taper and out of round. Same as above, I torqued them down to spec and measure. Unfortunately, results where not good. Cylinder 1, 2, and 3 are all out of round, .0015, .00125, and .00125...no bueno! FYI: Out of round condition for mains and rods are .0005.

What are my options here? Are there replacement rods other than NOS?

It is a very common procedure to resize rod and mains.
The rod caps are ground a few thousanths and then stuck on a line bore and brought back to size.
Same with the mains.

High dollar rebuilds all do it but a stock street engine...probably more cost than worth it.

But it depends on you, your money and how long your going to keep it.

Also, if installed right i probably would have went with the bronze sleeves in the guides over pressing the old ones out.

You could also have gone with PC valve seals if desired!

Well, I just hate knowing my rod clearances will be off right off the bat. I may make some phone calls just to get an idea on price. I did end up finding the process on you tube, seems simple enough.

Thanks for the note on the bronze inserts. I've still got that option If want to. We'll see how it goes.
