Default 727 Disassembly Problem.

Started tearing down my 727 this evening and I'm a bit confused. I got the transfer case off, now I can't figure out how to get this part off of the bell housing. Does that castle nut come off the top or is there something else I'm missing.

There is also a snap ring that you can see through the speedo hole, but I can't really access it. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a factory service manual (FSM) and or "A727 Handbook" by Carl Munroe? Attempting this job without one or the other reference is brave to say the least. You need to remove the adapter housing before you can access that snap ring. You need to remove the nut and bull gear before you can pull the housing. A beefy impact wrench will handle that nut.

So once the nut on top is removed, that housing will just slide up?

Also, is the torque converter just supposed to slide off or is there a trick to that. Mine won't come out. I have the munroe book and my factory manuals are on the way.

thanks in advance.

The Munroe book is great, though it doesn't cover the IH specific things like the Scout II married t-case adapter housing. That doesn't really matter. A Chrysler 2wd tail housing is what will be pictured in the book. Instead of a bull gear, it has a bolt on yoke retained by a very similar large nut. The housings look different, but the tear down procedure is essentially the same, so you can just follow the instructions in the book for that process. Yes, the converter should slide out by hand. It may take some minor jostling to get it moving. Don't pry on it.
