Default Another one saved!

The sone likes my heard of IH's and is always borrowing them to impress the guys and the girls.

So we heard about another IH junky thinning his heard and decided to see if any were worth saving from the crusher.

Well there were a couple with promise but the son wanted a travelall. So we struck a deal on a 70 1210 barn door 4wd with 304, manual brakes and manual steering and it looks like originally had a manual but was replaced with a 727. (which I prefer anyway)

A little history- The travelall was originally a school bus of all things with manual everything. Guess they don't make bus drivers like they used to.
it was puchased years ago by another member, Gravedigger, and he fixed it up and drove it for a few years until having to transfer to Japan. So about 8 years ago he sold it to this current owner. he drove it for a couple years and then as things starting going wrong and gas prices went up, it got taken off road around 2006 and the last time it was started/drove was about 2008. the owner said he never got more than 7mpg and it was cheaper to buy a cheap econobox then drive the travelall.

Well with a couple hours work cleaning points(what are these things and why are they in a distr?) and hooking up an old boat gas tank to the fuel pump, with a fresh battery she reluctantly awoke. I was able to get it moving and break it free from the bond the tires made with the earth. Manuvering it out of the back yard was another fun time. We negotiated around the travel trailer and the side hill full of blackberry bushes all under it's own power to where the trailer awaited her for the ride home.

negotiated in the deal were many parts to build her up to what the son wanted.
We got both under floor tanks and another rear side tank. So if desired it can be outfitted with 4 gas tanks at about 18 gal each. We also got a couple old front fenders with the fuel fill on them so we can cut and graft them into the fenders we use.

We also worked a deal for a power brake system and power steering box from a donor 72 1310 along with the dash and the windshield.

Spare barn doors and a few other trinkets laying around like a set of 36' military hummer tires.

After arriving home with her last weekend we have spent several hours pressure washing inside and out.
Then came new exhaust gaskets and 1 manifold that was cracked.
Rebuilt the completely worn out distr. (see my holley distr tips and tricks) Just that changed my base timing by 15*. What a difference. Adjusted the previously installed factory rebuilt holley carb. talk about lipstick on a pig!!!
Pulled all the plugs, which were just hand tight, but were all new 85's.

With the engine now running and firing on all 8, we moved to the power brakes.
It was a pretty straight forward bolt in swap with just a little grinding to open up the hole in the firewall for the pushrod. The pedal arm was already drilled for the new pushrod location and the brakelight switch bracket was already slotted to adjust to the new arm location.

What a difference power brakes make.

So the son drove it around this week and loves it. but it was drinking quite a bit of gas.
Well you know what i said......Dump the Junk (carb) and lets go EFI.
So we grabbed a bunch of my old spare parts and threw a TBI system on it.

We headed back out the previous owners place to pick up the power steering box and a few other parts today.
80 mile round trip and 5.7 gal = 14.03 MPG. Not bad for the first drive on EFI since we were driving back roads and passing cars wide open at times with no fine tuning.
I think there's hope for her.

Although the son may have future plans of a diesel with the 4 tanks so he can run 1 diesel the others WVO.

here's a few pics.

I wondered where this Travelall went. I saved a picture of it from years ago because I thought it was one of the coolest I had seen.

That's neat that you had seen it before.
Any idea what time frame that pic was from?
One of the previous owners was part of the NW Binders group. Maybe from a group meet when they were still active? Looks like another IH next to it.

What a great truck! Thank you for saving her. Would you consider parting with the rear seat? It would look great in my '73 Travelall

The picture says it was taken on 8/14/2004. I believe the owner was selling that burgandy Traveler sitting beside it and the new owner picking it up. If memory serves me correctly the person that bought the Traveler was IHscoutlover on here.

Curiosity killed the cat as they say. I was trying to make sure that I had the right member on BP that bought the Traveler, and here is another picture from ihscoutlover's photopost

LOL
Not that one but the original back seat may still be around.
I'll have to ask the previous owner.

That date would make the timeline about right.
