Isn't there a way to time it without a light? At least to get it close and drivable? I have a buddy who has one at his shop, so once I get it close, I can take it to him and fine tune it....

Yeah you can time by ear. as some one posted, turn the distributor with engine off, little at a time, start engine. when it sound smooth running you can turn slightly with it running to hear the changes, when you think you have it perfect you should be able to drive it to the shop to hook up the light.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt_KN...Z-7PmFj5Iucn8=

borrowed a timing light and I set the timing to 8 degrees. rechecked my points gap and they are at .017. Firing order is correct. Still missing and backfiring through the carb.

I tried to move the accelerator pump arm up to the inner notch and it didn't make a difference.

What am I missing here?????

Dont know crap about diagnosing but almost sounds like a vaccuum leak when you open up the throttle. But then again it may be my crappy headphones.

The nost likly culprit is a loose carb base to body, very common on 1 barrel carbs. A clogged slow run jet will do the same thing. Of course check for vacuum leaks and temporarilly plug the vacuum port to the top of the fuel pump if you have a vacuum boost type pump.

The carb seems to be attached tightly. I know that they said that they milled it to make sure that it was flat. Where is the slow run jet located? I will try to clean that up next.

I don't see any fittings on the fuel pump. I'm running an aftermarket electric wiper blade system.

I removed one of the fuel filters and made sure that there are not any kinks in the line, still not working right.

What should I time it to? I am at 8 but have other people saying it should be at 4 degrees.

I got the washer that I needed and am going to go put everything back together. I have a quick question about setting the float level. I cannot find a reference for setting it while in the vehicle. Everything i have found is for when you have the carb upside down.

Is there a rule of thumb for setting it while its on the motor?

OK, installed the correct washer, set the float bowl to level (when up) and now its idling nicely without any choke. When I would goose it, it would backfire still. I don't have a timing light here, so I rotated the dist counter clockwise maybe an 8th of a turn and it seems to have found its sweet spot.

There is still some hesitation when I gas it, but its not backfiring now and seems to rev out pretty nice. My issue now is that its smoking a lot! Here is a video, it seems to be oil related, I checked and the oil seems to be full on the dipstick. Its coming out of the oil fill tube, and from what I would guess is some type of case breather hose.

Here is a video.......

She is running like a champ! Took her out for her 1st real drive in over 15 years.

Went to put her new shoes on and ran into another major problem! Passenger side lug nuts all came off with no problems. Drivers side all of them were rusted on and will not come off. I used half a bottle of pb blaster and an impact wrench. Broke 2 studs so far and have stripped out 2 others. couldn't get any of them to break loose.

Driver's side lugs have the opposite thread pattern.
