Default Install or not to install ...?? :-)

Hi, I have a 74 Scout II

I am debating weather or not to bolt engine (345) /trans (727) and transfer case (d20) all together on garage floor, hook up kickdown, shifter etc Before installing or not. It seems easy enough, Is it?

What is your experience (clearance etc) ....It is up off ground pretty high (about 20" of room below frame) SOA plus 4" springs

First Scout, learning as we go any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jack

if you hook all that together you're looking at about 7-8' of length & close to a 1000K lbs.definately 2 man job.not w/shifter's.jeff

---Not that big of a deal & easier to align trans & engine.

---It would be a bit of a task with the TC twisting everything, but IMHO, it is the easiest way. TC shifter folds down enough to do it this way.

---You can be assured that the trans is lined up so you don't damage the pump & or seal & the trans will weigh down the back of the engine making it a breeze to install. Just slip the floor jack under it and roll both cherry-picker & jack at the same time, or roll the truck forward if you don't have a helper.

---I also always hooked up exhaust manifolds/headers prior to install.

---I'd say it would knock off 3 hours of work, not having to climb up and down to install bellhousing bolts and not having to raise the TC up by itself and bolt it in.

---I'd still recommend a trans jack with pivoting pad & straps/chains... as well as safety glasses & wheel scotches/chocks.

If that tilt is great enough and im using Twin-Sticks do you think they will clear into open trans cover area?

I have always installed the pieces separately. If the transfer case is not separate from the transmission, bolt them up and install as one unit.

Install the engine first or the trans first? I have done it both ways and neither is easier.

Do get yourself an engine leveler gadget to use with your hiost or crane - makes installation so much simpler. Borrow another club member's leveler: mine has installed many more engines than I have....
