Default 196 4 cylinder

Just looking for some thoughts on this engine. I realize they are probably not super-powerful. But, Are they adequate enough for every day cruising? Thanks

I have a 196 in my 66 and I like it. I haven't put many miles on it yet but intend to use it as my daily driver once I get it squared away.
It gets decent gas mileage and has plenty power/torque for me, but that's got more to do with the gear ratio.

It had 33s on it when I got it and I thought it was peppy so I'm assumin 4.27 or 4.56 maybe. I'd think tires that big with anything numerically lower would sap all perception of power.
Do some searches "gearing" "drive ratio" "tire size" There's lots of detailed info and explanations from people that actually know what they're talkin about.

I had a 1967 Scout 800 with a 196. The engine was a little tired when I got it but I never had any major problems. On the highway I had to keep it under 65 with 4.27 axle ratios. However, when I eventually put an overdrive on it I was able to get it safely up to 75. It wasn't a speed demon but it never quit on me. Even mostly stock I was able to pull several full size pickups out of mud and snow even pulling up hills. Had to be in low/low with good tires for off road but it would really pull. I miss it sometimes but I had too many Scouts and had to thin out the herd.
