Default 1965 Cub Cadet Model 71

I have a line on a 1965 Model 71 that runs but needs some work. I am a Scout guy and have not dabbled in tractors. Is this a good one to go after?

Any info...pros/cons would be helpful.

I have a feeling this could open up another avenue of my IH sickness......

Not sure how much they want for it but will wait to hear from everyone......

Thanks for any info.

The 71 is a fine tractor. It's not a powerhouse,(7 HP) but does work well. You can still get a large range of service parts to keep this tractor alive and running yet.

all cub cadet tractors (not the mtd junk) will last beyond your life if maintained..problem is parts have gotten very pricey,,15 years ago i restored my 1970 127 cub..today i would not have..i paid $700 back then for the k301 kohler (new long block) and now that engine is no more (epa BS)..id say do it but make sure you have a junker cub around for spare parts and try an avoid mtd cub parts as they are spensive anymore.

ps: manual or hydro trans?..about $700ish for a hydro rebuild today at central ILL hydraulics (one of the best repair shops on hydros)

ps: one way to save is the entire steering assembly is john deere..they used that column in a lot of garden tractors and john deere prices are way less than mtd wants if you can believe that (i bought new steering stuff at the jd dealer and saved)

ps: the cub tractors are great..the mower deck sucks..no where near as good as the simplicity-thats my only knock on the cubs..the mower decks suck...

I agree: I was raised using Cub Cadets and put more hours than I care to tell on a 129. The major issue we seemed to have over the years was the starter/genrator would give fits about every year or two. I have been told you can change the steering gear out of a similar JD. I think the Cub was 3 turns lock to lock and the JD was 4. So the JD gear on the cub was like power steering.
