I personally don't see this as a legitimate question.
Every person builds their own scout based on their time and budget. So every build is as good as those shown. A completely stock and preserved vehicle is just as good as a full custom job. You should start going to the IH shows and see them in person. There are many build threads already posted and there are many different picture threads. So just look around and make your own opinion if they are worthy. Better yet, get out in the yard and build your own.

I would guess you are overestimating the markup. With an icon you are (basically) buying a brand new vehicle. They only use the vin plate and a section of frame, just enough to qualify as a "restored vehicle". Also a team of designers, engineers etc and the research involved.
There was a thread recently about an eBay scout that the owner had 120,000 into (maybe, maybe not) It was no icon. I'd buy one.......if only.

"Better yet, get out in the yard and build your own". - I would if it weren't for the lack of talent, money and equipment.
![]() That one on the IHONLY site was about the nicest I've seen, I just thought there might be more.

There are a lot of nice builds out there.
This one from eBay is a very nice build. It's a great start for someone who wants to tinker, but not do the "heavy" portions of the build. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ViewItem#v4-41 Just my opinion here; Icon is on a different build plane. They take vehicles and turn them into beautiful works of industrial art. But they are not really a usable vehicle. There are builds on here that are much more appealing to me, because they are well finished, and very functional. There are also a lot of builds that never see the internet. Maybe 15% of the builds are documented on a forum somewhere. It's not near the vehicles that are out there.

You're also talking about two very different groups of people. Not to say that it's a negative, but the average IH owner is much more...uhhh..."frugal" than the average EB/Jeep/FJ owner. Having spent a considerable amount of time in the Jeep world, I've seen a lot of these guys don't bat an eye at dropping 5K+ into the suspension of their rigs, whereas us IH guys say "damn, I can build the whole dang truck for 5K and still have some beer money left over!"
I remember being told over and over and over again that I NEED a SWB Jeep with long arms, Dana 44s front and rear, lockers, and 35s to run X trail, yet I managed just fine on a LWB XJ, with Dana 30&35, open, 33s, and a short arm lift..all in a rig that I had $1500 invested into, total, including purchase price of the Jeep. Ironically, my planned Scout build will be the most expensive build I've ever done, lol. Functionally, with the exception of the more potent 302 in the EB, there is virtually no difference between the Scout 800, and the EB. Sure, it could be argued that the drivetrain was more stout on the IH trucks vs the Ford, but for the average Joe to buy one in the late 60s, and take it to the local trail, he wouldn't have seen much difference between the two (this is neither a slight nor props for either marque). Today, I'd say the IH trucks are more rare, yet, the EB has a considerably higher value than any of the IH trucks. There is also a considerably higher demand for them, both in restored and highly modified forms. I think that's the major reason you don't see many of these high dollar builds on IH trucks - the demand just isn't there, and it's not profitable for these companies to build them. Perhaps when the supply of other vehicles dry up, they might look at IHs, but to be honest, part of the appeal to me is still that it doesn't cost a fortune just to enter the world of IHCs

Maybe one day mine will be somewhat close to that tier. I love that others have said that WE, all of us, can build a decent Scout with out winning the lottery or being a CEO of GM or Google. What a cool hobby that gives us the opportunity to imagine, execute and refine OUR OWN perfect (well, maybe not perfect) vehicle. We don't need to pay bales of cash to someone else. |
