Default Transmission seals

Im pulling the tranny out of Beatrice next week to replace the front pump seal. While I'm at it I want to go ahead and replace and other seals to avoid doing this again. I'm also going to replace the rear main seal on the engine. What are the other seals in the tranny I should replace while it's out? Tips/tricks/advice?

While you have the front pump seal out you need to take a look at the bushing as well. Most times the front seal leak is due to a failing/failed bushing that needs to be replaced.

Also, when you're driving the seal in place, be careful not to knock the spring off of it.

There are a couple welsh plugs on the back side of the block by the RMS that you ccould replace. You're rear main seal kit will also come with the two side seals to replace.

As far as the tranny concerned, you could do a couple of the small seals. two shift shaft seals and dips stick seal,

The other tranny seals are in the back. You've got the rear servo pivot pin seal, tail housing to tranny gasket, and two seals on the rear output shaft.

Tips and tricks.

Thanks for the info. What other vehicles did the TF 727 come on that the local auto parts store can use to look up? The parts selection is usually limited when pulling it up as international scout.

The Torqueflite was run by quite a few Chryslers, Dodge's, and Jeeps but most of your local parts houses are not going to have what you need.

I've picked up a couple of the small seals locally at a tranny shop, just call around, you might be able to find everything you need.

Otherwise, TSR Racing has a good supply of parts and if you're really in the mood to extend the life of that Torqueflite as much as possible, a Transgo TF2 shift kit is a great idea.

Hey Jauringer-
I have my transmission out right now as well. I have not heard about upgrading the shift kit. I looked at the website you listed and did not see it. Can you let me/us know whats the story behind the new kit and if you have it? Just side note, I read a lot of your posts and want to thank you for some of the tips you have posted!

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the kind words. I've still have a lot to learn but If I can help, I will.

Transgo's kit creates a cleaner, firmer shift which helps to reduce heat. A couple of the more noticeable issues with a torqueflite is that Torque Converter and 2-3 shift overlap

The kit reduces/eliminates those issues. It also comes with a rear servo modification that reduces tha ability of the servo to flip in it's bore. There's a very good book (that was recommended to me here), Torqueflite-A727 Transmission Handbook by Carl Monroe that walks you through the install and goes into more detail of why this kit is recommended.

Installing this kit also gives you the opportunity R&R the valve body.

It's definitely a good idea to have the service manual and or Monroe book to reference during the install as the Transgo instructions are somewhat lacking. It covers the VB mods and installation well but that's it. The removal/reassembly/adjustment/install of the valve body will be covered in the service manual.

TSR does have the Transgo kit but it looks like there asking a lot $$ for it.

Transmission Center #2. 727 Transgo stage 2 shift kit. TRANSGO shift kits instantly reprogram automatic transmissions for high performance and durability. Cost $ 69.00

Summit has one for a little cheaper. Part #TRG-TF-2

The removal of the 727 (weight) was the hardest part.

I took the 727 to a auto shop for a quick look will it was half apart, to an expert eye it over.

just as well as did as the the clutch's were all gone.

I then put her backk to geather with new seals and filter.

While the 727 was at the shop i pulled the D20 T/Case apart and put a full seal kit in there as well.

Right now the 727 has 3 engine bolts holding her in.
