Default Torqueflite 727 adjusting bands

Adjusted the bands and replaced the filter of the transmission on my scout this weekend. I did the 10 pound/foot (120 pound/inches) which i found in my manual and then backed off 2 1/4 turns for both bands as I have the 345 engine.

Today I found this posting from IH only north
http://www.ihonlynorth.com/forums/tr...djustment.html
using 72 pound inch (6 pound foot) of torque and then backing off 2 1/2.

Now I have the gas tank out and a big heap of ice/snow outside the garage door so I haven't been able to test drive yet (will it just shoot out of the garage once i start it..? ;-) But I wonder if you guys have some experience and opinions on the torque settings and how many turns to back off before fixing the adjustment bolts? If I would want to redo it, now's my chance.

Mrwolf; I can say that I followed the IHON post you listed on my tranny and it worked just fine. MM did a good job with that post.

Okay, good. I too think it's a great post. Just the torque that got me wondering. Anyone tried to run the 10 foot/pounds I found in the manual?

I followed MM's write up to the T as well and haven't had any issues to date. This Scout has been owned by me for two years so the other 31 I have no clue about maintenance. I trust MM implicitly on his advice though.

Hm, Think the big thick manual might be wrong on this. I have done some more google searching and the only number I come up with everywhere is 72 inch pounds. Seems like I should have a second go at getting this this adjustment right :-|

You need to understand that the adjustment is NOT the 10lb/ft. It is how far you back it out. (yes it will have a small effect on it)
Niether is really wrong or right.
By snugging the screw down you are removing the slack and squeezing the oil out between the band and the drum. Then backing it out you are setting the free space so the drum can turn without dragging. The threads per inch of the screw and the apply arm ratio will determine how far the piston must travel and the force applied to engage the band on the drum.

There are many adjustment procedures that differ on the 727. If you install a transgo or other shift kit it will give different adjustments. Does it make it wrong, no.

Sorry, I removed the "censored" smiley at the end of my previous post. That was a probably over the line, and really not what I wanted. But we don't need to get all snappy for that, right? I can do fine without that tone, Bill :-( I'm trying to learn here, and thought other people might wanted to know for the future that there are different opinions on this topic between the literature and the common opinion found on the internet. I didn't find any posts on the BP with this issue so that's why I added it and wanted to check out other peoples opinions. We are all loving our vehicles here and trying to put as much care as possible into conserving and enjoying this little part of International Harvester history, and I don't think anyone would like this forum to turn out with the tone we have at sites like Pirate 4x4.

I'm confused.
I have no idea what "tone" your talking about.
I type a reply on the internet.
There is no emotion or tone involved.
It is merely facts concerning the adjustment of the bands.
If you chose to read a certain "tone" into my typed words then I can't do anything about that.

you are better off with the 10 foots pounds and back off 2 1/4 turns.
than the 7 inch pounds feets and back off 2.5 turns .
your adjustment gives a tighter band adjustment, quicker engagements-less slippage.
the less torque and more turns info gives a greater slack in the band and a longer time to engage, because the servo has to travel farther to move the band uptight against the hub.

OK, thanks Jay. I have very little experience with auto trans, more with manual transmission. At least the kick-down band is more or less accessible with the fluid and pan still in place so i guess as long as the drum/shafts can spin freely I could test it and then readjust at least the kick-down band later. Reading the manual and on the internet gives the impression that a quarter of a turn really makes a difference so I was a little sceptic yesterday. That difference is actually between 6 and 10 lbs/ft so that gives me more than half a turn in difference and I must admit I was a little scared when I tightened down that old band that much, it felt like a lot.
