Default Project: Freedom scout

So no rest for the wicked! Now that Bluefish is out the door for a while. It's time to start the next build. I'm calling this one Freedom scout as its owner is currently protecting our right to freedom in far off sandy place right now. And since he is all about buying American and enjoying all the freedoms that living in the USA offers us. That said lets get to the truck!
Our subject this time is a nice little 1962 model 80 scout.
The objective will be to modernize this truck to be a more. Comfortable
Daily driver, as well as a few modifications for the sake of style and stance.
The to do list: all improvement and repairs will be in this order. Taking care of needed repairs first then diving into custom work as time and budget allow.
1. Rebuilt 152
2. Hamilton EFI
3. Fix minor electrical issues (finish up owner installed painless kit)
4. overhaul/upgrade brakes
5. Mild lift ( not sure how. Soa? Sua springs?)
6. Full roll cage
7. Custom bumpers

Sorry guys I forgot to take pictures when I started this. First things first we want a fresh clean motor in this truck for peace of mind. The truck is currently running without any major problems. But this truck is about to be reborn. So a clean slate is in order. To speed things along the owner Acuired another 152 to rebuild so it. Could be built without any down time to the truck. This will still save me time as this motor was already in pieces. All the short block parts have been droped off at the machine shop. I ran the first few parts through the parts washer and blast cabinet this evening. Sorry forgot the before pictures!
I'll post up pictures of the truck as is when it roll in the garage. And of parts as they get refurbished. That's it for now.

My old truck looks pretty good.
Lookin at the data plate made me laugh a bit (86 net HP @4400rpm). Guess I never really though about it with all the work I've done trying to add power to the stock 152. I don't think I've ever revved the motor past 3500rpm without cringing. I remember white knuckling it down I-45 going only 65mph @ 3200rpm sustained. Ran pretty good but seemed to systematically cause other components to fail...
Hamilton fuel injection is exciting!
I wonder if this could be one of the first 152's to get a Hamilton Kit...

Just out of curiosity...how beat is that 152 and why another when you have a few other options including and up to a V-8? There is an entire 304 for sale http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/s...d.php?t=106858
and i know i saw a complete drive line v-8 for a scout I somewhere. These are just questions as it appears that you are not going for a stock restore project. i know you have some good parts for that motor but it would seem that a 196 would be better still than the 152 and there are a few people doing some seriously cool things with that engine, as well as the turbo option.

It's a start.

And now ready to pull! If only it wasn't raining.

That's it for today. Had to many errands to run, got started late.
Back at the station tomorrow. Hopefully it will be nice weather Sunday to pull the motor.

Because a well done 152 will be enough power. This is not going racing, it will not be a regular tow vehicle, and it will not be a hard core wheeler. So the 152 will work just fine. A motor swap would most likely be up for discussion if this were a long term, ground up build. But it's not. This is a face lift if you will, an updating of things. So I'm not going to reinvent the wheel, just make sure it rolls smooth and looks good doing it.

This Scout is in great shape!
My neighbor has a 152 in his '62 Scout 80. When he pulled it for the rebuild he port matched the head and smoothed the bowls a bit. Changed the cam to something just slightly more aggressive (I don't remember the grind, but it wasn't much).
With those mods, a fresh rebuild, and some work on the distributor curve, we ended up having to go up to a 67 main jet in the 1904 carb, and now it runs amazing. Has great power from the bottom on up to about 4K rpm, before the carb starts choking things off.

I'm very impressed with his 152. It will cruise down the freeway at 65, just as happy as a clam. And doesn't miss a beat climbing an average grade. He was all ready to upgrade to the 2V Webber, until we got his 1904 dialed in.
It's dead nuts reliable, and just a real pleasure.
Plus his gas mileage is crazy good! We did a 285 mile trip, and he averaged well over 25mpg. half the trip was back roads through hills and mountains, the other half was 90% freeway at 65mph or better.
And it has "that sound", which is just so fitting an older Scout.

This is going to be a cool build to watch!

Well I had hoped to get the motor pulled today and start cleaning things up in the engine compartment. But didn't get much sleep at work last night so when I got home I layed down for a short nap( I thought!) just got up an hour ago!
So to late to do much today. I'll be back at station tomorrow(overtime). So hopefully Tuesday I'll get some thing done!
I did look things over the other night and took some measurements for a few ideas I have.
Paul, you trust me right!
